My dad is currently stuck in Myrtle Beach right now because he doesn't have a credit or debit card. I reserved his flight and car rental thinking I could just give them my CC info when he got to the desk. Not the case apparently...

So now what? I find it very hard to believe a rental company can refuse you because you don't have a credit or debit card. That almost sounds unlawful. Certainly not everyone in the world carries one. I do realize my dad is a huge PITA for not having one and it really boils down to him being a stubborn SOB but that is beside the point right now.

How the hell do I get him in a rental car?! He has plenty of cash with him. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! This is throwing a real wrench into that.

craigslist, buy a beater for $500. Or there was this site where people would rent out their own cars, can't recall it right now though.

try http://www.rentawreck.com/cheap-car-rent…

See if they'll put your CC on file in case of accident, ect. and have him pay cash.

Or maybe a reloadable CC from a Walgreen's or something?

reloadable will not work. Not even something like a chase liquid that has an account and everything.

What's the situation in a little more detail? Is he trying to get home or is he on a trip?

looks like its time to call corporate and start working your way up the ladder.

Is my assumption correct that he wants to pay cash, and not use your CC? Would you let them keep it on file in case of accident? I wouldn't see a problem with that.

You could tell him to go to a bank and apply for one.

Every time I've rented a car, I've always had to show them my driver's license and a credit card. Even if it's a prepaid reservation, they want a card on file so they can charge you for any incidentals or damage.

Even trying to rent a car from the national car rental places with a debit card instead of a credit card is a pain in the ass and requires things like getting a credit check.

Looks like Rent-A-Wreck is your best option for cash .

They have a location in Myrtle Beach .

Not to be a dick, but to figure this out all I did was google 'rent a car without credit card' which led me to the bit about debit cards, and then googled 'rent a car with cash' to get the rent-a-wreck info. But anyway, hope this helps.

Also, I don't know why you've gotten yourself into the business of taking care of things which require credit cards for your dad who refuses to get a credit card, but this doesn't seem like a good business to be in.

That was my thinking too. But cc has to match the person picking up the car. This is "due to abundance of cc fraud". It's pretty lame... there has to be ways they can verify it's not a scam, I mean wtf! Especially since we are family and my cc has the same last name as him. Calling corporate is on the morning agenda. Thanks for writing.

Actually started perusing CL. Not many beaters that are running for under $1000. Myrtle Beach market sucks. There's a million here in Atlanta.

Flew him from Syracuse, NY to Myrtle. He was going to drive from Myrtle to Greenville, SC to come see my wheelchair softball team play our first tournament of the season. Whole reason he flew to there is because there is a super discount airline that we got a r/t ticket for $200 that I just booked tuesday.

Just realized I completely neglected to say he was driving quite far from MB in my original post. Not that he just needed a car to get around that city. Thanks for pointing that out. Will update.

While I appreciate your response, I am also well versed in Google and found RAW too. We will be contacting them first thing in the morning. I came to oppo to see if anyone had experience actually renting without a CC. There seems to be some vague info on the internet like " pressing the rental companies to accept cash and they will " and I was curious if anyone had success with that as well.

Of course since most living and breathing people carry cards I knew my chances were slim. And believe me, it's a real pain in the ass doing this shit for him and I'll be making sure he gets one after this weekend. He's just a stubborn old school dude. His credit card company raised his rates "due to a policy change" even though he never missed a payment in 15 years. So, being the guy he is he thought cancelling his card would "show them". Yeah... good work dad.
