So this is my mother's 2009 Audi A5 3.2. It's Black/Cinnamon with tech package/premium package/cold weather package/B&O Sound/etc. It's a frame-damaged 1-Owner with just shy of 60K and a nice 2' gash right above the rocker panel. It's one of those cars that looks super clean on a Carfax and through service records, but it's somewhat rough.

With title in hand, and some existing warranty coverage (extended), it would be wise for her to keep it. However, the dealer just offered her $24,000 for it. Don't ask me what they were smoking when they offered that, but the offer is on the table. Of course, it requires the purchase of a new car from them (duh).

She has it down to two choices and I pretty much an now deciding because she's indifferent.

Option #1:
2012 Audi A7 3.0 Prestige (Moonlight Blue/Velvet Beige w/ glossy wood trim)
31K Super Clean 1-Owner (CPO)
She's not too fond of the color but she says she can live with it.
$49K

Option #2:
2014 Audi A5 2.0T Premium Plus Cabriolet (Cuvee Silver/Brown Roof/Beige/Matte Wood)
Brand New
Exactly the color she wants with the feature content, though we would be losing the Band & Olufson Sound System
$52500 after what the dealer will do - originally sticker around $56,700.
(Not the exact car, but same color combo)

Any thoughts?

They're both awesome. I have a thing for the A7, but they are both great cars!

If she liked her A5, I'd stick with the A5 Cabrio. If she wants something different, get the A7.

I myself would get the A7, because all dem sexy looks.

two very different cars. Would she like a Vert' more than a very good looking sedan? If she doesnt need all the space I'd get the A5 cabrio. With a ~$50k budget, why not swing her towards a slightly used/CPO S4/5?

Here's what you and I know needs to happen.

(It totally won't, but that doesn't mean that it shouldn't!)

I think the most important question is - does she feel comfortable driving a big car?

The A7 is a much, much bigger car than the A5. It's 195.7" long vs. 182.1" (give or take, that was from a quick Google search).

That's 13.6" of difference. Not everyone is comfortable DD'ing a longer car. They're harder to park, harder to turn around, and just generally harder to deal than a smaller car that fits like a glove.

The facelifted A5 is nowhere near as attractive as the old one, while the A7 is gorgeous from almost any angle. I'd get the A7.

This woman has never been over 80MPH - it would be cruel to expose an S to such a feather-foot.

Haha my mothers the same way. I'd go towards a diesel if that's the case. My mom really likes Q5's, not sure how your mom feels about SUV's.

My father got rid of his '07 BMW X3 Sprint Package M/T for a 2013 A6 3.o last year. That was the end of my family's SUV reign!

not a bad SUV! How about a B8.5 wagon?

A convertible is an active choice. It's a choice I have made three times now (Sebring, CLK 320, S5) but it isn't for everybody.

However, as somebody with convertible experience, Audi is where it's at. The S5 with Quattro did not get stuck through a miserable Chicago winter, the back seats fold down to give it more storage space than any other (top up, top down you can get a new Weber grill or a sheet of drywall in the back seat of a convertible), I have turned more heads with the S5 than either of the other two, and of course the S5 does 0 - 60 in under 5 seconds, but she's not looking at an S, like you said.

The wife is looking at an A7 since she has driven the S5 and likes it, but is undecided between that, a Q5 or various BMWs since she really loves her 9 year old X3 and thinks she may want to stay with that brand.

We looked at both and she decided that she wants to stick with the A5 Cabrio. She's not losing a whole lot, since the blind spots aren't any worse on the cabrio.
