I have an intermittent grind that sounds like it is coming from my driver side front. It is a quiet metallic grid... almost like a metal coat hanger is rubbing my wheel. It started out yesterday being only when I turned hard-left. Today on my way home it was constant so I pulled into a gas station and yanked on my dust covers. I couldn't see anything rubbing so I went on my way... without any noise. Then I made a hard left and the noise returned but only when turning. If at any time I hit the brakes, the noise stops. I'm guessing(hoping) this is a dust cover problem and nothing else. Anyway, when I got home I crawled under my car and found this. I don't think this is my noise, but should I lube it? I'm planning on listing this car very soon and don't want to tear my suspension apart before hand. This isn't unsafe is it?

As for now, no. But it will become unsafe in a few weeks, as soon as the dirt eats the ball joint.

Sounds like you need brakes.

Doesn't appear to be his ball joint proper - instead, it appears to be the rod end on a sway bar link. Complete failure would make him wobbly left to right, but outright unsafe like a ball joint, I think not.

I could be wrong but it sounded like it was coming from the front. I just had the car inspected about a week ago and they said to check the rear brakes in a few months. They tell me that every year so I figured it wasn't a big deal. That could well be the case though. I just figured if it passed the inspection, I should be good.

May be I used a wrong word, but as far as I know that's a ball joint too... even if small.
You can leave it that way. Only hope that the buyer of your car doesn't ask to lift it on a deck.

I have a feeling this didn't just happen. It may have, but I would bet it was like this for a while. What symptoms would it cause? I haven't noticed anything in the steering or ride.

I have no idea what I am looking at here! Care to include the vehicle and maybe the mileage into the post? Or any previous maintenance?
To me, this looks like some (rear? front? what are we looking at here?) sway bar link. But that is just me, judging by ... well ... only one picture. Maybe another picture?

It's functionally the same, but in English mechanic use, the "ball joint" term is usually reserved for the press-in or bolted-on joints used on the primary suspension arms. Failure of which, in most cases, will mean suspension expansion or total collapse. What's failing in the pic, rather than being a separate item on a suspension arm, is on a rod link - if it were a tie rod, the term used would be "tie rod end", but in such a case as this, I'm not sure. Possibly one would refer to the whole item, as I've seen done before: a failing "sway bar link". If the joint were a separate item installed to the link, it might be a "link rod end", but I am not certain.
The short version, though: typical English use only says "ball joint" for the primary, separately mounted item connecting a spindle or hub link to control arms.

I'm not trying to screw anyone or put them in an unsafe vehicle. If it wasn't going to be a major issue, I would just inform the buyer and let them decide what to do with it. I just don't know if I want to attack it in my driveway. By the way, I got a jack and a set of stands over the weekend. Thanks for your input on that.

If your dust covers are not coming in contact with anything, and your wheel bearings are fine, then it may well be a sticking front brake caliper. I'd check the first twothings, though.
Definitely not your sway bar link - that would be possibly a squeak when cornering or even a bump. Needs fixing, but not that critical.

It is the front driver side sway bar link/end on an 03 Stratus RT coupe with 81k miles. Both inner and outer tie-rods were replaced on this corner about 7k miles ago. As for another picture, kinja didn't like it and I had to repost without the photo to get it to go through. I figured that since I stated the noise was driver-front, it would be assumed the photo was also driver-front. I should not have assumed.

Sounds like the front brakes to me, or possibly front wheel bearings.

Looks like sway bar link problem to me.
