You found a car you liked, looked at it face to face, took it for a spin (if you could) and was about to buy it, but something happened and you didn't get it. This happened to me on this car.
Yes, me RotaryLover, almost bought a Suzuki Cappuccino for 6500$ at the time in Montreal, Canada! If I knew better, I would had gotten it! Why? Because if you ever find one that is legal here, you'll have to pay 12k (in 2011, imagine now) ! :( I could not deal with the insurance compagnies with my bad driving record...so I didn't get it. Then I almost bought this...
For 4500!!! The guy was old and didn't know the true value of the car. I didn't buy it after the thought of buying overnight parts from Japan.
As people may know, I found out that I could afford a NC Miata because of this. A BMW 135i 2008.
I was this close to sign the papers, but again insurance killed me hard. That's why I've gotten the NC for about the same price. Cheap on insurance, gas and maintenance.
I could had gotten a RX7 earlier since one of my neighboors was selling his N/A FC Rx7 for about a 1K, then a guy at the arcade I used to go wanted to sell his Blue FC for 3K . I declined both because I was low on cash. Of course, I was aiming for an Rx8 too! But I needed a reliable and gas sipping car.
My father wanted me to get a brand new Mustang and was about to pay for it but I refused.
I wanted to join the midship team with a Aw11....
But finding a clean one was hell. All of them was rusty! So I stopped searching for them.
I had a year where all I wanted was a SVX, and it almost happened instead of the RX7. I wanted to swap the transmission for a 6 speed manual. It never happened...I wanted something lighter so I got the FC...
I wanted a Hardbody for 900$. But I said myself...I got 2 cars already...I got no space for a third one...I really wanted one though. Then a Chevy Colorado when in my mind because : 5 cyl sound!
I went through the Panther fad and didn't get one because I wanted the newer models. I was low on cash and I didn't want to pay over 6k for a beat up cop car.
I almost bought an Accord like this one for 3K because of the nostalgia of my father when he had one. It struck me hard. But it was modded and lowered. I didn't want that.
Now these are the last 3 cars that I almost took instead of taking the NA Miata I have now...
An 240z. It's still on sale today because it need restauration. I could not do restauration at the time. So out it went from my list. Next was this...
I could had gotten it. But I waited too long and it was sold before I could take a look.
Then last and not least...my deepest regret at 3500$.....
I took too long to buy it...someone else snatched it. You can hit me all you want Oppo.
EDIT: I forgot these.
I wanted something lightweight and different. I thought of this! But I was stuck on getting a RWD car. Maybe I should had taken it for the lulz.
For those who remember, I was looking at a Citroën SM imported from europe for 3200$! I called the guy once and never heard from him again...
Recently I had this Alfa Romeo GTV 2.0 V6 Turbo. Still on sale today for 9K!
Damn...I turned down so many cars....
So what about you guys?

This guy.
Not that I don't like the Crossfire but this would of been a car I could of kept forever. But you can't buy a car on a college budget knowing that you'll have to replace the engine sooner than later.

Back when it was new, I almost bought a 2008 M3 6-speed sedan, in Sparkling Graphite.
One test drive and I went from disinterested to insatiable desire for the car.
It would have been unwise financially down the road, so it's a good thing I didn't go through with it.

Let's just qualify that one, it was a bit of a rat, and had alot of dry bushings going on (and it was an automatic). Besides for that the steering feel was amazing compared to say, my E3 of the same year. I cut the power steering belt on that car due to overboost and a huge steering wheel

Money. I had the $3000 but it would have needed a professional quality resto and numbers matching components (not just engine/trans) to pull it's true value and I didn't want to do that. I figure it would have needed at least $35,000 in bodywork alone.

Not just me, but my family. We were looking for a new small car that was fun and fresh.
First up, a Peugeot 206 CC. I sat inside and nearly pried the interior apart with my fingers, so no...
Next up, a Vauxhall Tigra. It looked promising, right up until we found out it only had a titchy little 1.4 at the time - my dad immediately went NOPE, we need moar power.
So we got a Mini Cooper instead.

Me too!
When i got my first job, six month later i already save enough money to buy a decent, mid 90's luxury car. Very Unwise, but what the hell i want a merc.
Then my neighbor comes to my house with his Jaguar S-Type R. Fully standard, with quite a lot of options, and says to me he need a quick cash and selling his dd. then i took it to test drive and it simply blows my mind. I mean, at the time i didn't know a car could be that good. Maybe that's side effect of too many driving Kia Sephia. But then in our short test drive, i took the car for small motorway cruise, and the car overheats. Bad Luck.
Then i meet the guy who owns the S600 W140, and bought it.
A few years later, i was bored with my S-Class, and looking for something else. I almost bought a Mirage Cyborg. JDM, 1.6l 172hp N/A. It's feels brilliant. But the lack of parts scares me, especially mitsubishi parts are absurdly expensive here.
Then my Boss said he's selling his maserati 4200GT. That car was so good, i almost sellling my merc for that. but the MPG and parts scares me.
I also meet a guy with a Mini Cooper Cabriolet. not the new mini, Old Mini. It's fun litte car, but it was leaking and had many rust and i had no time to restore it so i walk away. And i regret that.
I also almost buy an E60 BMW 530d. Cracking car, the 530. But the i-Drive makes me mad an cancel it.
Then i bought the CLS550 after selling my Merc.
A year later, i was bored with my CLS that i need to find a new car.
I once find a Nissan President. But the owner strangely didn't want to let me drive his car, so i went out.
I also almost bought a Renault Avantime from a friend, but his wife was furious when she found her little Avantime is for sale. So i can't buy it. It was an awesome car, that Avantime.
And then i find my Crown.
I once tought of buying an AMG Mercedes after getting the crown. Then i found an E55 AMG. Very clean, the owner was cool guy, but the car has so much mods it's scares me.
I once in talk with a guy about buying his Purple Alpina B12 6.0. But i was too busy back then so i never get the chance to see the car, and it got sold.
And just a few weeks ago i almost bought myself a S60R Volvo. But The owner was lying by saying it was a manual, while the truth is it's auto.
Damn car i reject was so many.

2004 VW Phaeton V8
2004 Audi A4 3.0 Manual
2001 Isuzu Trooper Ltd.
1976 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham
1999 BMW 528i
1998 Oldsmobile Aurora

2009 Ford Flex

BMW e30, but not the M. It had the body panels, no spoiler. Basically same as this one only a slower but way more reliable motor. $3,000 for a 300,000 mile body with a 70,000 mile factory engine) Someone literally had just left to go look at this and put a reserve payment on it when I called. Thing was rough but the interior was clean and looked good from a small distance.
After that disappointment a Mazda Protege5 wagon. Closest image I can find below.
It was a bit lighter grey with a lip spoiler on the front instead of that grey bumper. Flying M logos, "universal" rack, short throw shifter, a few other mods, but nothing to compromise the integrity of the engine. $4500 with 110,000 miles. Yes one owner and it had service logs. Guy never answered.
Then...
130,000 mile bone stock 240sx. I'm not joking. It had the rims like the top picture, front bumper fiberglass was showing, and clearcoat was spotty, but a good to honest non modified daily driven, old grandma's car passed on to a 21 year old girl who needed the money for college instead. Hell yes it was manual. $3500. Turns out she changed her mind and never deleted the post.
Everything else on Craigslist I've forgotten so clearly it's not cool enough. (except all those muscle cars... Mavericks... Superbees... dang...)
After all that my parents just said whatever and bought this.
2013 Mazda3 iSport. 6 speed manual. Not as exciting as all those others but I'm not complaining. It was great to learn on though the clutch was finicky for someone new. However just as of a few weeks ago it's been replaced by...
So it's all awesome. For being 17 I feel my future is bound to be full of disappointing near buys.

I almost traded in my '95 Cobra for a '96 Mystic Cobra back in '00. I realized having something with expensive paint would be bad for a DD.
2002 Local Ford dealer got in on a trade a Real 1998 Saleen S351 S/C Speedster
I was this close to trading my '95 Cobra my DD '99 Explorer 2wd and selling a few project volvos to get this one. I really really regret not doing this to this day. This was my dream car in high school and the price was good at $30k.
Fast forward to 2005 and I wanted a "normal" DD and found this a '98 S70 T5 but the seller wouldn't budge on the price with high mileage.

In 2008, I was driving a '99 Miata 10th Anniversary Edition as my only car in Madison, WI (and surviving in winter thanks to Blizzaks). I decided it was time for a car with things like a back seat and roof.
I came very close to buying...
2008 Mazda RX-8
Mazda had just refreshed the car for '08, I loved how it handled, and dealers were willing to discount them like crazy. I got as far as emailing several dealers to get the best price, and then decided that rwd and a semi-decent back seat wasn't quite the amount of practicality I was looking for.
Then I almost bought a CPO 2005 Audi S4.
I test drove it on a weekend, and after a bit of thinking decided to buy it even though it was silver (I hate silver cars) and didn't have the sport package that I wanted, because at least it was here locally in Madison. I called the sales guy to tell him I'd be coming in that night, but I had to put the stock wheels back on my Miata before trading it in.
After work I got home and started swapping my wheels. The sales sales guy called me twice asking if I'm coming, I told him yes I'm just changing out the wheels and will be there as soon as I finish. Finally got the wheels changed, drove over to the Audi dealer, got there like 2 minutes after they supposedly close and it's completely closed down, lights off, doors locked, nobody in sight. At 8 pm.
I was PISSED. I spent a summer in college selling cars and we NEVER shut the dealership down right at closing time, especially if we had talked to a customer who said they were on their way. There were always stragglers and we sold a bunch of cars after closing. Apparently this dealer never got the memo. I left the guy a nasty message along the lines of "I'm here at the dealership, it's 8:02, WHERE YOU AT BRO?" Because really, do you want to sell a car and make some money, or do you want to get out of there at 7:59? The next day I tried via email to negotiate a price, they wouldn't budge, I said screw it I'm not overpaying for a silver car when I hate silver cars.
Then I bought a CPO 2006 Mazdaspeed 6, which I got rid of about a year ago. But it was a fun car...and GALAXY GRAY, not silver (this is my former car right before I got rid of it).

Ill start with my first car. I wanted a CRX. Badly. My father wouldn't allow it becasue of how small it was.
Down the road I almost bought a 92 3000GT VR4 but the kids father who held the title wouldn't sell it, so I ended up with a 93 instead...
I've also almost bought (in no particular order) a C5 corvette, an E36 M3, A gen II Viper GTS, a 7.3L PSD (actually I almost bought a few of these throughout the years), a 6.7L Scorpion Diesel, Countless Fox bodies, a C6 Z06, 370Z, Lincoln MKZ hybrid (damn straight), an S197 GT (different from the one I ended up with), an 07 GT500, Dodge Stealth RT/TT, two different Galant VR-4's, A Mini Cooper S, C6 with LS3, 03 Mach 1, LS2 GTO, Jeep Liberty with the CRD, 74' Roadrunner 440 6 pack, Dart (old one not new one), Miata,
There's probably more I just can't recall.

These are only 2 cars I ever wanted to buy but did not. I still regret not getting both.
If I would of bought the truck odds are I would still have it and it would be payed off. The skyline was the nicest one I've ever seen(for a GTS-T) and I deeply regret not getting it.
2007 Ford Ranger Sport RWD 4.0L 5spd Manual. I had custom ordered it right from the factory total price with taxes and all was just over $21000. I was 20 at the time and it would of been my first new vehicle. I was living on my own and wasn't making a ton of money so the $380/month payment scared me off and I cancelled the order and bought a $9000 1991 Toyota Soarer Twin Turbo.
1991 Nissan Skyline R32 GTS-T manual. It was 100% stock with only 28,000kms, this thing was literally showroom condition. It was $11000(in 2007) and worth every penny. I had put a deposit on it and was gonna sell the Soarer to buy it. but I decided to keep the Soarer instead(big mistake). I sold the Soarer 3 months later and bought a 1990 Nissan Fairlady Z Twin turbo 5spd.

Overall reliability was mostly fine but I got rid of it for 2 reasons:
1. It developed rust problems. I spent a couple grand fixing rust in various places, only to have some of it return plus sprout up in new places. I decided to get rid of it rather than dump more money into fixing rust. I got a good trade offer and good lease deal on my 135is, so I jumped on it. (Yes I live in Wisconsin and winters here are rough on cars, but I mean, my '99 Grand Cherokee winter beater is 7 years older than that MS6 was and doesn't have any rusty body panels.)
2. The interior squeaked and rattled like CRAZY. The materials seemed nice enough to the touch but any time I went over a bump the car just felt cheap.

OOooh, I like this game. I have a short car history due to being just 21. However, there were a lot of cars I wanted before I actually got my car(s).
First up, I wanted a Ford F-350 in 5th grade.
Next car I remembered wanting was the 2008 smart fortwo. This was 2008 and I was a High School Sophomore.
After major backlash from classmates, I started branching out:
Then, when I finally got my first actual car (2011), it was a 2001 KIA Rio sedan. This exact car, actually...
And in 2012, I bought my first new car! Reverting back to what I really actually wanted in High School. Nope, no regret, not one bit! It's like a go-kart for adults!

Cars I almost bought when I had 10k to buy my first sporty car, this was in 2001
Porsche 928- it was an automatic
300XZ turbo- also automatic
Celica All-Trac- seller wanted 10k would not budge on price
VW Corrado V6 5 speed- Buyer could not get the title released from the bank decided to keep it.
I ended up with a 95 Prelude Si
When it was time to upgrade my Prelude this was 2003-2004
RSX Type-S cool but not exciting enough
1st gen WRX- too expensive to insure
Ordered a 2004 Mini Cooper S
3 years later Mini got totaled- I wanted a wagon, almost snagged an A4 Quattro but the CarFax was not clean, then I found an great E46 Touring but was sold to someone else at the last minute.
Bought a 2005 Legacy GT wagon.
2 years later, clutch problems on the wagon decided to trade in for a warranty.
Was ready to close a deal on a 2010 Honda Fit Sport, but the dealer pulled some bullshit at the last minute and I walked away. Then I was going to get a 2008 Saturn Astra XR, dealer offered me crap for my trade. Went to the Mazda dealer drove the 3 they offered my 13k for my Subie (500 over KBB) I took the only 6MT 3 on the lot...too bad it was black.

I looked at one of these a few months ago, it was a Datsun 240k with an L28 but it had the skyline badges, grille, tail-lights and fender flares etc. It had quite a bit of surface rust and didn't run when I got there (namely because it had no carbs on it at all, the owner had put them on a 240z he had which wasn't running either). It needed a lot of work and the guy wanted too much.
I might go back to him in a few months to see if he'll lower his price though.
It looked more like the next pic and he still wanted $8k for it.

I've almost bought a couple of XJRs, the first one the dealer sent to auction instead of negotiating on the price with me and the second one was a couple states away and someone backed into it before I could go buy it. Ended up buying a MINI Cooper S instead, but still lust after those XJRs.
I also test drove a Vehicross around the same time and should have bought it but it was a bit out of my price range at the time. Definitely one of the most fun to drive cars I've driven.
Then there's the multitude of Craigslist listings I was too late to. 3 or 4 Porsche 911 SCs under 10 grand that I eventually see on eBay for $20k+. A mint 1970 Mercedes 280SL for $10k that ended up on eBay a couple weeks later for $50k. And my favorite, a Panhard 24 that was $2500, I was next in line if the buyer backed out, but they didn't.
Before I bought my 335d, there was a CPO 2009 Porsche Cayman S perfectly optioned for a steal at the nearby Porsche dealer, but when I went to go look at it, there were in the process of certifying and wouldn't let me look at or test drive it. They didn't notify me when they were done like they were supposed to and someone else bought it.
Recently tried to buy a new M235i but the dealer wouldn't work with me on price/trade-in, so I left and am still driving my 335d. That was kind of an impulse decision anyway so its probably for the best.
I'm happy the 1962 Austin Healey Sprite I have isn't on this list and I hope the 1968 Porsche 912 with a 3.0 swap I'm trying to contact about doesn't end up here.

I'll qualify that it's an Aussie car, so $8k is not completely unreasonable if it was in better condition.
The last 240k coupe I saw for sale in Australia wanted $26k in great condition. To get a C110 imported from Japan you're looking at $30-40k.

Bought all the car I wanted, exept a C5 Z06 I was aiming for, but bought a C4 LT1 instead due to being low on cash...
Now I'm moving to Japan, so I'm wondering...
R32 GTR? FD RX7? or the cheaper simpler way... Prepped NA or NB roadster? Cappuccino? AZ-1? Will I fit in the last two? lol... I could go for a 300Zx twin turbo also... Would love a 240Z, but they are expensive... I don't know... All I know is that I want something fun but I would not mind something reliable too... So FD or GTR... mehhh... not sure...
Really I don't know, help... :)

I heard there are some stricts rules and taxes about the old cars. This is why they get rid of them with so little mileage. If I recall, it's best to have a Kei car if you don't have any space to park. I'd get a Cappuccino or a Honda Beat. The AZ-1 must be rare.

I almost bought a clean 5-speed S14 for like $1500 back in the early 2000s before the drift craze hit. Fuck me, right?

Only "rule" is that cars over ten years old have to pass an extra test every year for about 10.000yen (100$), on top of the shaken (so 1 year, shaken, next year small test, then shaken again...etc etc etc) ... Japanese can't be bothered, so they get rid of their cars before that...
Other than that, rules are much more compliant on older cars (emissions and so on), so it's not a bad thing afterall :)
AZ-1 are not common indeed and bit on the pricy side... They are not that rare either though...

I drove the car and decided not to buy it because the leather interior was a little beat up...

The rule that Quebecquers tend to forget is that it's NOT illegal to import RHD cars in Quebec... They just have to be 25 years old, instead of the usual 15 year old rule for the rest of Canada... So wait two more years and you can import a Cappuccino in Quebec again.

Oh yeah, I also recently missed out on a 190E 2.3-16v for $3000. The seller already had someone there looking at it by the time I called.

Subaru Legacy Sport wagon. Not the 2005-2009 version, but the original 1989-1994 model. Equipped with an automatic gearbox and mechanic owned but located three hours away. It was in the high-3k/low-4k range.
(not the exact car, but pretty close)
Fortunately my dad realized that a 20-year-old turbo car, particularly one with high mileage, wasn't exactly a wise financial decision.

I almost bought a 1983 Land Rover SIII 88 RHD imported from the UK for $5500 4 or so years ago to be used as my first car. My parents wouldn't let me buy it because there was a minor amount of rust on the rear bumper and it wouldn't go faster than 60mph. They didn't understand the gearing. I even got to test drive it! It was awesome. Now they're all around $20k. :/
It looked almost exactly like this one (red with the white stripe) but had the safari hard top instead of the rag top.
