What's that magical package code combo? ZPS+ZMT=Fun!
Or in other words, Sport Package and Manual Transmission.
I'm determined to one day buy a BMW and do the European delivery experience. That just seems so cool.
Unless of course they stop doing it by then. Which with my luck, by the time I could afford a new BMW, they would.

so many things i'd rather have than a 2.0 4 cylinder for 40k
![]() 06/17/2014 at 00:51 |

The only things that I can think of are the V8 pony cars.

A nice Ram 2500 with the 5.9 Cummins and NV5600 and a Miata.

I was think new but ok...

for 40K, I'd rather have a Stage 2 Golf R....
![]() 06/17/2014 at 00:54 |

If the 320i was available when I was buying I probably would have sprung for a ZMT. The 328i was just more than I wanted to pay with any decent options.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 00:55 |

That doesn't sound like a reliability nightmare AT ALL.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 00:56 |
|
I know it's considered the "entry level" 3-series, but it's the most attractive to me in terms of price and performance. That engine is way underrated.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 00:58 |
|
You have to check the cam follower every 10k miles (15 minute job and a $40 part), but Stage 2 doesn't really affect reliability.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 00:58 |
|
for $40k you can go stage 2, and a nice set of wheels and coilovers.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 00:58 |

Yeah, well maybe, but I'd rather have a 350hp hatchback that has AWD for that money
![]() 06/17/2014 at 00:59 |
|
Or balls to the wall, put a K04 on there, and get a 430hp beast of a hatchback!
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:02 |

More power than my dad's Silverado going through a Haldex AWD system that has a standard front bias. That doesn't sound like my cup 'o tea.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:03 |
|
The Golf R already has a K04...at least mine does.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:03 |
|
my 300hp Golf R sure doesn't feel like FWD to me..
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:04 |
|
I said it had a front bias. It can move the power to the back wheels if need be.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:05 |
|
What I'm saying is, the handling is surprisingly neutral. It does push, sure but it feels easy to get it to rotate. Especially with Stage 2 ESC defeat.
Now ESC defeat + the HPA Competition Haldex controller = power-on oversteering Hoonmobile.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:06 |
|
I'm fairly certain there's a way to change it to a more RWD biased system. I've heard a few people doing it... And that sounds like fun! I'd rather be planted and understeer than Oversteer. Having had a few bad experiences with oversteer in a car with my dad, I've grown to dislike it a bit...
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:07 |
|
Really? Why does APR offer it as an upgrade on Golf R's then...?
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:07 |
|
And what I'm saying is 300+ horsepower AWD hatchback just aren't my cup 'o tea. Especially when they carry the infamous VW reliability trait around with them.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:08 |
|
I'd rather be able to power oversteer out of something than understeer into a ditch almost. Ask me how I learned what my preference is.

Thats an extremely ignorant statement to make when defending a BMW.

It is not underrated, it's a 180hp 2.0L turbo, which is pathetic. It's an anemic engine. Get a CPO 335i for $8k lesss.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:21 |

Funny, my aunt's '08 328i convertible has gone 6 years with only standard maintenance.
My girlfriend's dad has a '97 328i that hasn't had any issues in it's life.
My aunt's old '04 325ic never had any issues either.
If you take care of it it'll work just fine.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:24 |

EVERY BMW engine is underrated from the factory.
Please tell me how it does 0-60 in 6.7 seconds with only 180 horsepower.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:29 |
|
Oh...Then a new Cummins 2500 4x4 with a 6 speed.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:30 |
|
Because BMW reliability is SO much better.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:30 |
|
How would it not? 0-60 in 6.7 is slow. Abarth has 160hp, weighs a few hundred lbs less, and does it in 6.8. My 335d weighs a few hundred lbs more, has 85 more hp a few hundred more torques and does it in 6s.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:31 |
|
From the experiences the BMW owners in my family have had, yes.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:32 |
|
Stage 2 ESC + HPA competition controller = power oversteering Golf R.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:33 |

APR does not offer a K04 turbo for the Golf R. They offer it for the GTI.
APR's Stage 3 turbo for the Golf R is quite a bit bigger than a K04. Loba has a mild turbo upgrade that is slightly bigger than a K04 and utilizes the stock manifold and exhaust.

ahh, ok, thank you for clearing that up for me! The more you know... :)
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:35 |

Well likewise I have put 200,000+ miles on VAG cars over the last ten years and I have had very good reliability. Then again, I always keep my cars well maintained.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:35 |
|
Not every car has to have a sub 6-second 0-60. It's a base model. The cheap one.
That few hundred pounds in the Abarth should make up more than .1 second. Pretty sad when a performance model is slower than a base model 3-series.
Of course a 335d is gonna be faster! It has like triple the torques this has! That's more than plenty to make up for the weight difference!
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:39 |
|
There are plenty of BMWs with issues despite the three people you know who didn't have any.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:41 |
|
Because people think they can run them like you run a Civic. They take a special kind of attention to run for a long time. Like, yes they say you can go 8,000 miles between oil changes, but that's would be stupid to do quite honestly.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:44 |
|
What are you talking about? The Abarth is a cheap $18k car with 160hp. It's a fiat. I wasn't comparing them as cars. If a 2500 lb car with 160hp can do 0-60 in 6.8s, then it stands to reason that a 3500lb car with 180 hp and a twin scroll turbo can do it in 6.7. For the record, I also own a 335d which is a diesel that does 0-60 in 6s and is not a performance car.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:46 |
|
THE ABARTH IS NOT $18K. WHERE ARE YOU GETTING THAT NUMBER!?
IT'S ALMOST $22K!
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:49 |
|
Are you high? Have you been to a BMW dealership lately? No one buying a new BMW would try to "run it like a civic". Also, you get free maintainence. Brakes and everything for 5/50k. You're not making any sense. And have you seen how many computer gizmos the new bimmers have? The 328i I had didn't didn't even have a dipstick. Everything was electronic. No mount of maintenance can prevent German electronics from taking a shit.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:52 |
|
I'm getting the number from what me and lots of other people paid for them. There was a place selling them as low as $16 after I bought mine. Pro Tip: you don't pay what the manufacturers website tells you to when buying a new car.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:52 |

Here's how I feel about it. If you're going to bitch about keepup on a German car, DONT BUY A FUCKING GERMAN CAR.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:53 |

Pro Tip: I'm not a fucking idiot. Piss off.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 01:56 |

I'm not "bitching". I was just pointing out that As a BMW owner, BMWs are not any more reliable than any other German automobile. My maintenance is still free for one year so I'm gtg.

You do realize you could get an E90 M3 with some miles on it for 40 grand? Four cylinder? No.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 06:39 |

Same power with more torque than my dad's engaging as all hell E46, needless to say plenty for a daily.
.... If this had the E46 chassis, steering, weight, dynamics, etc..... So sad.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 10:23 |

I got my old e90 328i xDrive loaded for 44k. This does not seem like an enticing prospect. I did the smart thing and replaced it with an e34 m5... Dat s38

Yes.

I must be an odd one to actually prefer it over the E46.
![]() 06/17/2014 at 22:59 |

The steering at the limit legitimately worries me. The only way to tell you're scrubbing in the front or all four is the audible note. As a daily it's just fine, as a performer dressed up in a presentable package I felt it lacking sorely.
It missed the one thing all E30, E36, E46, and E9X BMW's had always had for me, when I got to where I was going I was happy to get there and stop, rather than just keep on driving with a giant, stupid grin on my face (for comparison I drove an E90 328i my dealer also had on CPO and confirmed hands down, to me, it was far and beyond the superior driver).
