First thing they should do is drive it and lose at least $2,000,000.

More and more inaccessible? There are tons of cheap fun cars you can get! Then you make them fast!

No, I'm talking about older muscle cars. The prices, even for shitty examples have shot through the roof for most of them.

Wow, talk about crack pipe.

If you aren't afraid of working on old, rusty stuff, there's actually quite a few decent looking project cars out there.

Family member had an unrestored 71 convertible. Sat in a garage in Germany for many years. Went for a half million.

Oh okay, yeah I can see that. I guess it is that time when the people that had these cars back then are now rich enough to buy them back at super inflated price. That's the only reason I can think of.

I think you mailed it. Also, these high profile auction houses aren't helping anything, either.

For a Plymouth …. If I were to buy a muscle/pony car right now, It would have to a Cougar. They are just so nice and cheap.

Ownership of classic cars of this stature is like owning a prize race horse, it's not supposed to be affordable for everyone. Exclusivity sells. As much as some folks like to preach on here that automotive culture should be inclusive to all, it really isn't, it never will be.

I agree. I found a prime candidate for restoration just a few weeks ago. I'll dig around and see if I still have the pics. It was already on a trailer like it was just begging someone to take it home with them.

CP? Not really. It still sit in his garage for a few years, only to be sold for $5m or so.

These are not cars to drive, they are investments.

I kind of want to go to one, just to see what the crowd is like. I don't know why, but I always feel like the amount of people that actually like cars there are much lower than what I expect.

For fun, I did a quick calculation. Let's say you had $3M burning a hole in your pocket, and you really had to dump an unreasonable pile on a classic boomer ride. If you used $1M for the car purchase, on auto trader classics right now, there are two Shelby GT350s and a 69 Camaro that come up if you search between $900k and $1M. And using a handy calculator ( https://www.investor.gov/tools/calculat… ), if we put that remaining $2M to work at a very conservative 4% compounding monthly, it would throw off a bit over $81k per year. Sure, taxes have to come out of that, and at a likely higher than average rate; but it's also income for which you need do absolutely nothing. You could take any job you liked, regardless of paycheck, or start a business, or just do hobbies. Which means whoever bought that car either has absolute mountains of wealth, or is exceptionally bad at money/math, or is unshakably obsessed with owning a 'Cuda.

That's one of the reasons I love Corvairs. They're so incredibly accessible.

I'll agree with that. I wouldn't mind having a Corvair truck at some point.
