Stacked headlights (probably), unique fastback-ish style tail with (maybe) a crease, divided grill with very wide body color middle rib (wider than a GTO), fairly squared off but not absurdly so. So far, my brain says "mash up of all Pontiac LeMans ever" and vapor-locks.

You would think so, but apparently not. Wider center rib, they think, and a more LeMans sport-coupe-like tail.

How sure on the stacked headlights? Maybe a Catalina but when you cross into 1968+ fastback territory there's less stacked lights.

I know there's not split in the grille, btu at least a Galaxie is wide enough

Very well might be a Catalina *if* the side grill reliefs were removed. I'll shop the Catalina, the 2+2 (so fuckin' weird, can't believe I hadn't seen 'em before), and the Cat Ventura and see what they think.

I used to pass a 2+2 Catty 421 every 2 weeks on my way to work for years. Parked under a tarp. Stopped and made offers 3 times but no sale.

Your guess was actually correct. The '72 88's funhouse-mirror headlights left a confusion over whether the headlights were vertical or stacked - turns out, the confusion was a bigger clue than them being (purportedly) stacked.
