So I was driving around the back roads of my hometown the other night, and just had the urge to downshift a couple of gears and put the throttle through the floorboards. I did, and I enjoyed it. But I got to thinking, what is that trigger for you all to do the same? Familiarity, adventure, do you just see a straightaway and want to use it for all it is worth?
I realized I used to run my 16V Scirocco back from this girls house on this particular road right before curfew and it was always a challenge. I think I was having flashbacks of 17 years ago to this time and I couldnt control it.

Interstate on-ramps, passing on 2-lane roads, mountain roads, or pulling out from school. Mostly pulling out from school.

interstate on ramps are de best. Occassionally I will also go pretty quick on short stretches of boring deserted highway around here.

My kids always tell me to "go faster, dad!" My wife, on the other hand, cancels the order before it gets fulfilled. :-( In any case, the traffic is just too shitty around here to have any fun.
In any case, I'm not a speed junkie, I'm an acceleration junkie. I like the forces of accelerating and turning, so when I'm on a quiet stretch of road, or at a deserted red light, you can bet the car goes into Sport mode for a fast launch. When I hit the legal posted speed, I'm off the gas and cruising.

yeah alot of times I will lay off when I hit the posted, but sometimes I push it to one step beyond. I used to drive this twisty road at something like triple the posted late night (25 posted), but I have too much to live for to ever do that again

Typically just when I am by myself. Would never want to hurt someone trying to hoon.

Merging on to a quiet 4 lane road, just in case things get extra squirrely.

Traffic on the roads? Keep the speed down.

Literally any time I have a stretch of open, relatively smooth road in front of me; any time it has rained and conditions are ripe for tail-out shenanigans; any time I'm angry; any time I'm happy; and any time the weather is nice.
Generally just whenever.

I go fast to enjoy a good corner, and put a smile on. Also to get away from bad drivers on the expressway. On saturday I found the perfect speed for a corner going to my parents house where I could just start to hear both front and rear tires start to give just a bit.

I'm pretty much going to echo whats been said. I am more of a G-force guy (acceleration and cornering). I've been over 140/50 only a few times in my life, and decided it is seriously not worth it ever again. Instead I'd perfer a bout of acceleration or a quick grip test. But I'm always alone if I'm in a car, and alone on the road. I only do something on a road/offramp/on ramp I am really familiar with. There are a couple street turns I can swing a tail out just to get a laugh out of my passenger, but just a quick swing and correction. I don't pull full drifts, and don't go for high G turns in which there's prolonged screeching. Why I do it, is just for fun or to keep my skills fresh.

The two main things that limit my speed are the wife and the possibility of getting a ticket. I amuse myself by always hitting my braking points and apexes and being as smooth as possible even though the speeds are greatly reduced. It still amazes me how my wife confuses cornering or braking hard enough to tip a champagne glass over with not being smooth after all these years.

Only place I "speed" is on the highway, and even then it's only 5-over because the speed limit is 70 and my speedo reads 5mph low, so when my speedo says 70 I'm going 75mph. Anything above that and I feel the engine is revving too high, so I don't ever really speed.
In town or on country roads, nope, sorry, the roads are not race tracks, and hitting deer also really sucks, why increase the odds.

Whenever I take off from a stop light or stop sign I usually go full throttle. My car doesn't have enough torque or the right gearing to spin the rear tires, so I floor it and get up to speed real quick.
Also when I'm getting on the highway. And when I go to pass on the highway. Or if I'm on a straight road and no one else is around.
In other words, I'm at full throttle a lot.. The fast part just never happens.

Sometimes when I'm late to work, or late to get to my girlfriend's.
The latter of which feels like C'etait un Rendesvouz, which is pretty cool :)
Other than that, it's whenever I'm on a familiar road at a time where there's no traffic and I feel like making some noise :)

of course when on fields. We had a Fairmont we used to run in a field behind my friends grandpas garage. We would flip it and he would just come out with the tractor and turn it butter side up again

When the roads are mostly empty. There's no sense in being stupid around people that could be crazy in all the wrong ways. It's more fun with someone else in a similarly fast car just wants to keep up. It's downright dangerous when they think it's time to race.
One thing I've done in the past (which only actually worked out once) was just about 5 over in a two lane back road by me, side by side with another guy doing about the same thing, and with both of our hi beams on, we could see better, and it was fun just doing a little pull once in a while. It's not about proving how much you had to compensate for, it's just about having fun and being respectful to everyone, including yourself.

That's very true. The only people I'd ever hoon with are my best friends and my dad. Anyone also would get scared shitless. Maybe show off to a female, if I ever get the chance... :P

Where? Wherever and whenever I can do it - not with other cars around and not on heavily populated roads. Twisty backroads are where it's best - I wish we had canyons on the East Coast.
Why? Because that's something I live for - I love nothing more than acceleration, hard cornering, and that underlying feeling that you just might lose it at any second.

Empty backroads with only a few to none houses, on-ramps (idiots getting on at 50 are a hinderance), whooping people on the freeway who disdainfully look at what they think are undeserved stripes, and this one long sweeping curve where someone expects a shopping complex to one day be made.
So pretty much anything my dad does because then it's ok. Now when will he finally go to a big parking lot?
Edit: I just realized I sound like a piece of crap with the freeway one and thought I'd clarify it's for people like ricers, people flipping me off (THEY HAVE! Once.), and bro truckers pointing and laughing at me for going the speed limit. Also freeway has to 90% straight and pretty open.

The inspiring parts of Ithaca are mostly located on three umt-hundred foot high hills with curvy roads and dramatic gorges in between. Hearing your car huff up some these hills at slow pace day after day can be absolutely mind numbing. Down right depressing when the exhaust on my dd rusted off. It is very satisfying to explode up these inclines when you have space and a capable car.
Such as with my other car, boosted to within an inch of its life, planting the gas on a 30 degree + incline makes me feel exactly like...
....Huh there's a super clean green Cirocco with gold wire wheels on a horder's residence near my apt. I speculate horder because every square inch around the wooded, dilapidated house is covered in garbage or non running cars. The Sirocco's paint/body is almost perfect even with the foglights intact but the inside is full to the headliner with boxes and papers n shit. Then a brand new Subaru Legacy in the driveway. I'll take a pic...

I almost went to Ithaca myself! My parents werent springing for out of state tuition anyhow so they shut it down and I ended up at UCONN all these years ago. But I loved that area. Please do take pictures. Ill go put up a damn shed for the guy

Ya should n I would I'm amazed I don't see a spot of rust on it, not sure how long its sat but I hope to muster the courage to wade in there someday and see if anyone's home. Mildly funny story state tuition is why I was dragged back to Ithaca (College) from Boulder after a year, and the beauty in enjoying myself as a semi adult here, and wtkns glen is why I haven't left yet.
