I suggest you spend the top of your range. The more you save up front the more you spend in the long run! $2000 isn't too much to spend on ze 944

Let me save you the trouble - don't. Get more budget first.

~4000$ for the base car + 2000$ for parts and repairs will net you a very nice driver.

I'd buy this one and get some new seats and maybe have a professional do some body touch ups. Then I'd cruise the tires off it.

That's ok, then spend that whole 2K!

Or wait a couple months and make some cash using some smart new idea. I dunno what that idea is yet. Still trying to come up with it.

Yes but that isn't a driving car. I also think OP has said before he doesn't have the space for a true project let alone a place for a car to strip while making money to THEN get a project while a carcass sits around being picked apart. He's also a high schooler. If he already had a 944 and a garage? That 500$ 944 might be perfect.

Yep. Probably get it for 3500 and spend ~500 on some little touches here and there +1000 for some body repairs and it could be very nice for a 5000$ car.

This one was up back in November then taken down. Who would've thought that the one I wanted the most then is back up now. The thing is that I don't need a new daily driver, I want it to be a running project car. Something I could work on when I've got free time.

Even so, spend more to have a better base car. You will quickly spend more trying to restore an old one than it would to buy a better condition driver and just improve that one here and there.

I am always happy to help. Here are some candidates . If you want more specific area, pass me the zipcode and ill search again.

Michigan:

1. This one is a great red, 1983 ,qith 143,000 miles. It is in Toledo Michgan

http://toledo.craigslist.org/cto/4483331632…

2. This is also a red one, but looks much better, and is 1985. It has only 90,000 miles! This is in Wyandotte, says it runs great. I believe this is the best one.

http://detroit.craigslist.org/wyn/cto/445252…

3. This one is beige, which is the exact color you DONT want your sporty Porsche, but it does look in excellent shape, it is 500 over budget though. It is in Lansing michigan. Its an 85 with 105,000 miles.

http://lansing.craigslist.org/cto/4498974006…

Ohio:

1. Cleveland Ohio, it has 56,000 original miles, an 85 and is a great looking red. Its not mint, and has been parked in a garage since 1999. It does need some work, but it does start when parked and runs as well. It is for you to work on it.

http://cleveland.craigslist.org/cto/4477794696…

2. This one is a bit more crappy, it needs work, but it does run. You have to fix it up, and is a bit high mileaged. 1984.

http://zanesville.craigslist.org/cto/4498460911…

3. This is a silver one 1987, looks decent, and has 137,000 miles.

http://columbus.craigslist.org/cto/4474235911…

Illinois:

1. This is a black on black 1988 with 135,000 miles and replaced parts. It is over budget, but seems decent.

http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/cto/4517029028…

2. This is a burgundy 1986, which looks pretty decent, and has 138,000 miles. It is over budget, but probably reasonable.

http://columbiamo.craigslist.org/cto/4504755189…

Pennsylvania:

1. This one is blue with some tasty black stripes, only 98,000 miles, and is right on budget for this 1983 model.

http://altoona.craigslist.org/cto/4469682052…

Wisconsin:

1. This is a black one, in good condition that is running well. It looks clean, has a reasonable 122,000 miles, is a 1983, and seller asks $2,500

http://appleton.craigslist.org/cto/4496804023…

Hope this helped and you get it!

That is AWESOME! Although I will have to correct you, and Craigslist on one small thing.

Toledo is in Ohio :P

But it is very close to the border or Michigan and Ohio so I guess that makes sense? :)

I went to find the one in Wyandotte last week and there was no car so I took that one off my list. :(

I do like these cars though:

http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/cto/4517029028…

Hahaha

Seriously though I MESSED UP BADLY

I bought an expensive house in 2005. I put a HUGE down payment on it. I tried to sell it last year but couldn't so I'm renting it out and losing money every month cause the rent doesn't cover all expenses. The house still isn't worth what I paid for it, not even counting upgrades and maintenance costs.

Had I bought a Ford GT or Carrera GT with that down payment I would have actually made money instead of losing money! And I'd be driving it around instead of dealing with issues at the rental house.

I think this is what you should do over the next 15 years:

Add a 944

Add a 914

Add a 928

Add a 964

Add a 968

Add a 924

Then you'll have two different types of air cooled 911s, and every other Porsche made between 1970 to 1990

You'll just need a barn to put them all in

Honestly, you'll have a tough time finding a 944 in your search radius. Ideally, you should be looking in the New York Tri-State area since premium cars are more common and more available on the used market. Don't rule out a 924 or a Miata.

I'm no stranger to the cheap first car hassle. I bought my Miata for $3750 back in 2011. Regardless of the car's reliability reputation, you need to expect to put in at least $1000 to get it up and running. My Miata was very solid and extremely dependable over the 2 years I owned it, but it needed new belts/fluids/tires/brakes right when I bought it. A 944 will likely need the same kind of maintenance, but parts will be twice as expensive as Mazda parts.

We will have 20 episodes before we start. We could maybe borrow fellow Opponaut's cars and review them.
