I don't know if I find watching a bunch of my fellow Americans in a bar (in the South, nonetheless) acting like they're really interested in a soccer game between Spain and the Netherlands funny or sad.

I'm not sure how to respond to your post.

It was a hell of a game and a rematch of the last final... Why wouldn't people watch?

Because Americans aren't supposed to care about soccer. Not caring about soccer is an American tradition as old as mom and apple pie. That's why we call it soccer and not football like the rest of the world. We took the name of the world's most beloved game, stripped it away, and gave it literally the dumbest name on the planet. Then, just to spite the rest of the world, we took the name of football and applied it to a game we made up that has very little to do with feet and almost every thing to do with throwing, catching, and running with the ball - three things that you cannot do in soccer. Oh, and the ball isn't even a ball, it's egg shaped because 'Merica!

Soccer is the world's most beloved game. Pretending that we don't care about what happens elsewhere in the world is America's.
