Prices went up for me, your neighbour to the north, who has no real reason to pay so much more than you do. So, I pay the equivalent of 5.37$ per gallon of regular and close to 6$ for premium. And our europeen friends pay way more still.
/endrant
Don't mind me today people.

Out of curiosity, what are the octane levels of those prices?

actually funny you mention that..i spoke with someone yesterday who lives in the UK and Florida/Canada depending on the season. She mentioned that after all costs are considered the UK fuel costs are per Liter and are the same as Canada about 1.40 per Liter

I wonder if the impact between dollar values has anything to do with the differences...

Difference between Europe and USA is 4-5 points, UK 97 will be the same as 92-93 in the USA. The UK use the Ron or Research octane number where as over there they use the Pump octane number which is calculated from both the motor octane number and the research octane number. You should be able to find a chart which compares the motor octane, Research octane and pump octane numbers

What part of the country are you in? Regular around here has been ~$1.23/L for the last little while.

This is the main reason I have been researching the heck out of plug-in hybrids. Ideally I'd like something with enough electric range to get around town, and added gas range for long trips.
Right now there aren't a ton of them out there. The cheapest one I have found was a 2011 Chevy Volt in the bay area for ~$22k.

what mr_gofast said. Our octane levels in Canada are calculated in the same way as the USA. Our regular is 87 and premium is 91(our system)

The volt does look mighty tempting especially since it's just a good car overall.

Gas station this morning in Michigan was at 3.98 for regular so a full dollar almost.

Which means it would be about 15$ cheaper to fill up my Mustang in Michigan. Differences like that can add up in a hurry.

Slightly. They are a lot further north. Gas prices in Calgary are generally higher than, say, Lloydminster. I'm not sure what they are up in Ft. Mac.

I hadn't considered the Volt too much, but upon learning that used prices were not too bad, it's become a viable option. Our original plan was to buy a Tesla in <10 years, but now I'm thinking more of a plug-in hybrid in <5 years.
From all the reading I've done, it does seem like the Volt is one of the better options out there. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV would be another option, but they aren't sold in North America yet. The C-Max Energi looks nice, has an amazing range, but also has quite a limited sized trunk. The Fusion Energi also looks decent, but is also quite a large vehicle. The BMW i3 has an amazing looking interior, but even with the gas range extender, has a reasonably limited range.
Ideally it'd be nice to have something with a 100 km electric range and another 500 km gas range. So far no one seems to offer something quite like that. Honestly, I think a minivan would be an interesting platform to work with. Tons of interior space and a huge floorpan to store batteries. Stuff a small gas engine up front for when running on gas-only mode.

I honestly don't know why no one else has done it yet. You'd think Chrysler would be all over it, given their history of minivans.

I always find it surprising when a business completely screws up and makes the worst choice possible. Like Kodak knowing about digital photography, but not doing a thing about it until they were way too late to the game.
