The category classifications in the late 1990s confuses the hell out of me. There's LMP1 which is obvious, but then there's the homologation GT1s which are just as fast? And then GT1's name changed?

GT1>LMPGT>GTS>GT1?

And how many manufacturers actually took part in this category in the 1990s? Porsche, Nissan, Toyota, Mercedes, anyone else?

To my knowledge, GT1 cars (which were supposed to be production-based, but were exploited under a number of loopholes) were becoming faster than prototypes, so the FIA turned it into the LMPGT class, which were closed-cockpit prototypes that raced alongside the LMPs, which were open-cockpit.
