Hey Oppo, I need your help to try and make the impossible? possible.

My girlfriend is doing an internship that's about 8 hours or 700km or 450miles away. I've driven it a couple times using rental cars and another time by bus.

A rental car costs about 350$ round trip, the bus is 200$ round trip, a plane ticket is 700$

Now, say I do this twice a month, that's at least 400$. Three times a month, that's 600$.

My question is: Can I purchase or lease a car for 2 months and do this cheaper?

Here are my thoughts so far:

Option 1: Take over a lease such as this: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

Pros: FREE (with incentive), newer car, can rack up the miles, warranty, well maintained

Cons: I'm liable for any damages done by the previous owner, higher insurance rates

Option 2: Purchase a used car and hope to sell it for the same price?

Pros: Could turn out great with a low buy in cost, insurance is 1/5th of the price

Cons: Repairs, hard to resell, etc

I don't have a motorcycle license. They cost a lot to get here so I'm holding out until I leave (hint 2 months haha)

Ridiculously cheap to insure, too.

When I needed a temporary car for a 80 mile a day commute, I went and got myself an old Honda. It worked out decently. I know with rental companies you can do a long term rental for like 2 months, through Enterprise it was like 1500 for two months though. Enterprise isn't the only one though, there are quite a few big ones, budget is always a good one as well if you are looking to save money, I wouldn't take over a lease on someone's car, because what happens when you don't need it anymore, but you can't offload it quick enough?

www.rentawreck.ca

My dad got one from there when he needed a car for a few months after I drove his car into a truck. Not the newest or best vehicles ever, but a lot cheaper than hertz etc.

If you purchase a car you still need to pay tax, tags, title, registration, etc. as well as insurance and gas, along with any repairs. I'm thinking the cheapest way to see her twice a month for two months is going to be by bus, meaning $800. Plus, do you really want to buy the cheapest car you can find to drive 450 miles each way to see her? Sounds a bit scary to me.

OR you could try communicating with her and let her know "I would really love to see you once a week but it's at least $200 a trip to come here" and see if she has any suggestions.

Look into monthly car rentals. Usually mileage is unlimited and you'll move into break even territory with the bus trip if you make the drive more than 3 times a month.

Haha, I've tried talking to her and she get's that it's expensive. That's why I'm looking for an alternative if I can find one. I've been looking for the theoretical loophole haha.

That's true with the purchase vs bus, especially in the cheapest car I can find. a good 4 hour patch of the drive has no cell reception and no police/people period.

Thanks!

Anyone you know that has an extra car you could borrow for two months? Maybe reimburse them for payments and insurance for those two months.

Thanks! I've been considering a late 90s civic hatch (Civic CX) since it get's ridiculous milage but the drive is horrible from my past experience.

Long term rentals are definitely pricey. I"m an enterprise guy since I'm 24 and they have the best rates for under 25$. It's over 3 grand with insurance :(

Well the lease I'd pickup would end by August/September so I'm not too concerned about offloading it. More about damages by the original leaser.

Damn, that is expensive.

I would say just get a cheap beater my friend, it could double over as a winter/bad weather beater if the car works out well and you want to keep it.

Perhaps, the thing is that I don't plan on having the car after these two months. Public transport brings me door to door from home to my office downtown in one bus and I may not be here in about three months.

Haha, that was my plan in 3 months time, however, at 6ft3 and with large shoulders... after I sat in one that thought faded away very quickly.

Option 2: Purchase a used car and hope to sell it for the same price?

A used car is by far the most risky. Not only you might lose money selling it after, but any major breakdown will quickly result in the most costly option, especially if said breakdown happens half way.

Now for the lease take over, move lease agencies won't allow a take-over with less than 6 months to go. Also, I would be very suspicious about the motivation of someone eanting to get out of a lease with 2 months to go, that's fishy.

Cheapest way is the bus, but if you really want a car, rent one.

find someone who lost license DUI/too many tickets etc, or someone who has a summer car they are currently driving and "rent" their car. Go get insurance on it. This happened to me and I was happy someone made my monthly payment when I couldn't drive. I verified insurance and handed them the keys. Just bring it back full of gas and detailed. FYI it was a relatives friend. I wouldn't just have done this with anyone.

Most rental companies will do long-term rentals at a lower monthly rate.
