I'm probably square in the middle of AutoTrader's sights with their new Dukes of Hazzard themed commercial, and for the most part, I like it. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , but I think simply not showing the roof was a pretty skillful dodge, avoiding the wrath of both show purists and those who find the Confederate battle flag offensive. But there is something I find disturbing about the spot.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
The Duke Boys would never have traded in the General Lee.
In one of the made-for-TV reunion movies, Bo and Luke come home to Hazzard and mention something about wishing the General were still around. Uncle Jesse scolds them right then and there for ever thinking he were gone. He opens the barn to reveal their Charger waiting patiently for them. "The General's family," Uncle Jesse says.
And in his song, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , Johnny Cash sings, from the perspective of the car, "I'm the best pal the Duke Boys ever had." And he was right.
To fans of the show, the General was as much a star as any of the other characters. You could get a poster "autographed" by the famous Charger. They'd have someone drive one of the cars over a corner of the poster, and the tire track was the car's signature. Even the other characters on the show regarded the car warmly, as more than just a hunk of garishly painted steel.
And this made quite the impression on my young mind. I remember bawling at one episode as a kid that had the General in the crusher with the jaws closing. Of course, the Duke Boys came along just in time to save him. Phew! But something about that has stuck with me. I tend to get emotionally attached to certain cars. Heck, some of the best friends I ever had were cars. I think of my own car as a lifelong companion, not a transportation appliance.
So yeah, it's an amusing commercial. But it's also completely out of character for Bo and Luke Duke. Nothing will ever convince me that they'd really give up their best friend for something as silly as a new Viper.

Yeah it is solely because people get their undies in a knot for pointless reasons.

More pointless than making a critique of a commercial over how well it jibes with the characters portrayed within it?
