I was just watching some youtube working and there was an ad for Bud Light Lime Strawberry Margarita. It claimed it was "beer".

I am not a beer snob in anyway, I'll happily drink swill like Coors Light, Budweiser and Canadian, however "Bud Light Lime Strawberry Beergarita" is NOT in anyway shape or form "beer".

ABI groups beer into four segments: sub-premium, premium, premium plus, and highend. The sub-premium segment, also referred to as the value segment, generally consists of lager beers, such as Natural and Keystone branded beer, and some ales and malt liquors, which are priced lower than premium beers, made from less expensive ingredients and are generally perceived as being of lower quality than premium beers. The premium segment generally consists of medium-priced American lager beers, such as ABI's Budweiser, and the Miller and Coors brand families, including the "light" varieties. The premium plus segment consists largely of American beers that are priced somewhat higher than premium beers, made from more expensive ingredients and are generally perceived to be of superior quality. Examples of beers in the premium plus category include Bud Light Lime, Bud Light Platinum, Bud Light Lime-a-Rita and Michelob Ultra.

The Justice Department considers it to be a premium beer, even over your precious Budweiser and Bud Light. That's gotta sting....

Probably easier for them to distribute as "beer," since it's the type of thing you'd want to be able to sell in supermarkets wherever possible.

I am not saying Budwieser was the be all and end all of beer, I am just sayzin that "Bud light Lime strawberry whatever" is not beer in any meaningful sense. It's a cooler for all intents and purposes.

What do you expect from our government? I think anything that is a 'malt liquor' needs to go to the bottom of the ladder ASAP.

It's a malt beverage

I don't know if this is still true, but I know they used to have the following disclaimer on malt beverage bottles:

"MALT BEVERAGE (FLAVORED BEER IN TEXAS)"

So it's beer. But only Texans consider it beer. Take from that what you will

1. Budweiser= Rice beer.

2. Bud Light Lime Straw-Ber-Ita is an affront to beer drinkers everywhere

3. Canadian is much better than Coors Light.

4. Miller Lite is the best american macro light.

5. Now I want a beer.

It might be considered a shandy or something along those lines. It's a malt beverage with sugar and fruit flavoring.

"Beer" has about 10x lower tax rates than "Spirits" also, so they can be easier to sell to consumers.

Yeah, they even listed it as such in the article. Oh, guess it could be for being an imported beer. Here is where I got my information.

Straw-ber-rita, "wine" coolers, Smirnoff Ice (which contains no vodka), are all beers. They are just flavored beers. But they are beer based on how they are created.

Since January 1991 when United States Congress quintupled the excise tax on wine, [2] most producers of wine coolers dropped wine from the mix, substituting it with cheaper malt . These malt-based coolers, while sometimes referred to as "wine coolers," are in a different category of beverage – sometimes called "malt beverage," "malternative," or just "cooler." Bartles & Jaymes refers to their malt beverage as a "flavored malt cooler".

.......

Today, Lime-a-Rita will launch its much-anticipated new flavor: Bud Light Lime Straw-Ber-Rita, an 8%* alc/vol flavored malt beverage that blends the refreshment of Bud Light Lime with the taste of an authentic strawberry margarita. ( Anheuser Busch aka InBev )

Was at a baseball game and they sold ice cold STELLA for the same price as diet Bud. High end, sure.

"Premium" as in value-added product that happens to have a premium cost to the consumer . That label is no way indicative of premium quality .
