About a month ago I bought a 1999 C5 from a reputable dealer here in the Detroit area. The salesman pointed at the tires and said "they're practically brand new". Bullshit flag on the play. Their tread was still deep but they looked dry and they had build dates in 2004. Old tires. Stupid salesman.
Anyhoo, I replaced the tires last week and this is what the inside sidewall on one of the fronts looked like:
Downright terrifying.

If that dealer is reputable, I would drag those tires in and ask if they were negligent or downright malicious in sending you out with those.

Yeah, I'm pretty pissed. I used the dry tires as a bargaining chip on the price, but just because I figured they were dry. I didn't know they were friggin' junk.

I've got the same issue on a Honda Pilot we just got for free - tires are dry rotted and full of plugs, but luckily still hold air.

Well if this is any indication, you may want to ditch those ASAP! I'm lucky I never hit a big hole or chunk of debris in the ~1,500 miles I put on them (which itself is a godamn miracle in Michigan).

If they sell tires, I'd bargain to get a deep discount on the set you now need on the car you bought from them. Bonus point if you smack em on the nose with a newspaper and yell "BAD SALESMAN, BAD!"
And if you don't mind me asking, which dealer is this so I can stay far, far, away? I'm in Royal Oak and going to be car shopping around this time next year.

It's to be used as a winter beater/spare car, so the tires aren't going to see much use for a while. Plus I've got to put new shocks on it and get an alignment before any serious driving happens.

I bought a set of Dunlop Direzzas a couple days after bringing the car home, I just got around to mounting them last week. For sure I'd like to hit this guy with a lot more than a newspaper!
I bought it from Les Stanford. And to be sure, I really don't think the salesman was smart enough to know they were bad. He seemed to be parroting all the standard used car salesman lines without actually saying anything useful. I generally ignored most of what he said. I mostly chalk it up to ignorance on the part of the dealership. I also accept part of the blame for not laying down under the car and doing a proper inspection before buying it. I poked all over the top side and under the hood and everything was in such good shape that I just assumed it was as good below! Lesson learned.

Direzzas are a good choice.
Back to the D to live or visit? I might come check out Dreamcruise this summer but I essentially have no plans to move back. Also, I'm looking at getting a new place out here in the Chicagoland burbs.

Give me a scream when you're in town. We'll go auto-crossing. At K-mart. In the middle of the night.
