So, that was a bastard of a job

I'm replacing two of the five silencers that the Jaaag has with straight pipes and it's a bitch of a job. These two silencers just so happen to be attached to pipes that hook over the top of the driveshafts, and it's a bugger of a job to fit them in. Couple that to existing pipes that were so rusted together at the joints I resorted to the angle-grinder to get them off. Difficult.

The most irritating bit by far was when the left-hand pipe slid home after about 5 minutes of wiggling, but the right-hand pipe stubbornly refused to do so. I tried for bloody ages from all different angles of attack, but no dice.

It was then that I noticed that the exhaust hanger on the right-hand pipe was 1/4" taller than the one on the left, so I cut it down to size with a hacksaw and welded it back together and had another stab at it.

Still nothing...

...until, after about 15 minutes of aneurysms and cursing, the bastard thing finally got into the right position and slid home nicely.

Honestly, the release was euphoric. I nearly fell asleep under the car ;)

No photos other than this one unfortunately, as I reckon I'd have slung my camera across the drive by now :S

Tomorrow will bring the rebuild of the system, and hopefully some video footage :)

I feel your pain! I hate when I do something to one side of a car, and it's easy, and do the same procedure to the other side of the car and it's painful. For me, most recently, it was the suspension on the M5.

What kind of Jaaaag is this that it has 5 silencers? I assume you're welding those pipes together in place? I want to learn how to do that.

Hell yes it is :)

To be honest, I'm most looking forward to being able to heel and toe again. Having to look down to see what the revs are doing sort of ruined your mid-corner flow :S

It's a '92 4.0l XJ40 :) recently bought, and up until now completely silent from the exhaust end while driving around. Great for Jaguar's new-buyer clientele, but not quite right for me, yet :)

The pipes are actually an aftermarket part. The rest of the system clamps on in sections.

Ideally you want a TIG welder to do exhausts, although other welding techniques would work too. I definitely want to have a go at doing it. Maybe make a 6-3-1 stainless manifold for the '40 :)
