Oppo, I was chosen to be part of the Order of the arrow which is like an honors society in the Boy Scouts. However, to join you have to do an ordeal, thick involves sleeping under the stars for a night and then a day of 'cheerful service' has anyone done this and can they tell me about the ordeal. I am going to the camp this friday with a couple buddies of mine whom were also selected.

I'm OA-Brotherhood. Very much worth it. I can't go into the details of the ceremony, but it is an honor and a privilege to be inducted.

You'll have fun.

I'm in Boy Scouts and have some friends that made it into OA. However, I do not know what the ordeal was. If I remember correctly, they mentioned something about a day of silence, but other than that I don't know.

Yes. I was OA a decade ago (that feels really freaking weird to say). We really aren't supposed to tell you about it.

If you really want to know, I'll tell you.

Nice! Congrats. I was OA as a Scout waaaay back in the old days. As I understand it, they no longer do the bad initiation stuff that I had to go through so don't worry. I won't tell you what they will do because we are sworn to never disclose it (it's an honor thing). I will say that after doing a quick search to see what is out there on it, what I read was pretty accurate. Seriously, it's not a big deal and you'll sail through it.

Part of the ordeal is to not tell other people about the ordeal. I'm sure the details vary, but silence was involved at mine

I also was an arrowman over 20 years ago. It was an honor to be elected by my troop and it made a lasting impression on me.
Have a good and safe Ordeal. It will make more sense why the secrecy when you're through it.

When I was in scout camp, older scouts that were selected had to go a whole day without speaking under any circumstances. However, these were not people I liked, and them shutting up for a day was pretty much the highlight of my stay.

Congratulations, though! I'll have to ask my dad, as I believe he is in OA.

*EDIT: He asked me not do disclose too much, but said, "don't worry."

I was told to eat a lot before I came because they don't feed you much until the evening ceremony, I'm not worried, but more what would be the best gear to bring?

It's awesome to know there are other boy scouts (current and former) on Oppo

The 'Sleeping Under The Stars' bit is a euphemism. The 'Stars' will be tracer fire and mortar rounds. The 'sleeping' is what you will choose to do if you want to be killed and eaten by warrior cannibals - an understandable choice considering what awaits those who survive.

For your day of cheerful service, you will be coated in the blood of your fallen brothers. Aside from the coating, you will be naked. The coating of blood is a cloak. As part of their sacred rituals, the cannibals cut out their olfactory nodes and wear them as earrings, so they will not smell the iron tint in the blood. Everything in the cannibal village is blood red. You will blend in as a cloaked klingon warship does against the hungry blackness of space.

For 12 hours and no less, you will spend a day in the cannibal village murdering their mutated younglings. It is a grisly task. It is morally black. It will leave you a shattered human being, and you will spend the remainder of your youth ravaged by night terrors. But it is a needed sacrifice, for only the younglings are vulnerable; adult warrior cannibals are almost impossible to kill, and the cannibal scourge must be dealt with. It is the reason the Scouts organization exists at all. Sacrifices must be made.

If you are not discovered and disemboweled from chin to taint with your own blade, you will escape their village and become one of the chosen Scouts of the Order. Which will entitle you to a watch.

It's a nice watch. Not 'TAG Heuer' nice, but still pretty good.

Been there, done that, have the sash with the bars. Compared to getting the eagle scout it's a walk in the park. You'll have a good time, don't sweat it.

We were allowed to say one word, which we actually said a few times. That word was 'snake'

Overall it was a great experience, clearly. Look at all of us remembering it in a positive light, I mean I did the thing 10 years ago and remember it pretty vividly.

I'm an OA Brotherhood member. Like Pat said, we can't provide details. Just trust in yourself that you can do it. It's definitely worthwhile.

It's a shame. I had a lousy experience at scout camp. The biggest thing I didn't like was the fact that other kids got to be in charge of me just because they were older, even though they were totally irresponsible. One of them, my former next-door neighbor, lit a match in my eye, and another one made Jew jokes and threw mud balls at me. There was good stuff, but it was that experience that got me out of scouting. That being said, I was kind of a whiny wuss at the time. The fact that every single other kid got picked up by a manly-man in a pickup, and I got picked up by a business-y guy in a Lexus didn't help. And yes, they made jokes at my dad and his prissy Lexus, never mind the fact that he is an Eagle Scout and I believe also an OA.

When i was in scouts, all of the dads gave mine crap because he had a small car where they had trucks. Mind you his "small car" was a Saturn Ion Redline with the track pack. They made jokes about the hamster spinning in a wheel till my dad passed the convoy of trucks on a two lane road while still in a passing zone.

MY GOD, MY DAD DID THE SAME THING!!!! I was telling him while everyone was leaving how they made fun of the car, and he was like, "We'll show 'em." Passed about seven of them at once on the country road, then another four further on. Straight six FTW!

I did that back in the day. Be glad you are doing it during the summer and not in late fall. It was so cold when I did mine. We had a small service project to complete and spent the majority of the day sitting in silence trying to keep warm.

That blows. Scouts was pretty great to me, although it had some down moments with jerk kids. I came close to quitting once because of a bad campo it but stuck with it. The leadership was pretty good when I started and by the time I was done my friend was senior patrol leader and I was ASPL, we had a blast that year. I'm an Eagle Scout and I finished it pretty early, when I was 14, so my last two years of scouts were great because I didn't really have to do anything. I did some BS merit badges and screwed around as ASPL running different activities on campouts

I can't say a whole lot of specifics, but I just hope that your chapter takes it more seriously than mine- my ordeal unfortunately was sort of a joke because none of the leadership at that ordeal really cared, and I was one of only a few that took it seriously.

Congratulations, though! You'll enjoy it, I'm sure. Best of luck on becoming an Eagle Scout (if you plan on staying in scouts for that long), I'd say it's the greatest thing I've ever achieved, and I really enjoyed the whole thing.

I was inducted 25 or 30 years ago. Worth it. The stuff we did was pretty cool.

The best thing I remember from my induction weekend was my first cup of coffee ever. It was about 5 in the morning, on a cold drizzly day and we were standing in a field. One of the scout masters walked up to me, and handed me a cup of coffee. I took a sip, and heard a choir of angels. I've been a junkie since then.
