After racing wrapped up I turned over to the X Games and these skateboarders aren't wearing any protective gear at all, not even a helmet. Stupidity is obviously a requirement to ride a skateboard.

Helmets should be mandatory, but I do sort of understand the rest. Skateboarding is really just acrobatics with wheels, and padding would only get in the way.

I assume you were watching the men's street final, since that's what just wrapped up. It SEEMS to be the least risky. However I saw how much concrete they laid down for the park and street courses and were it me, I'd be wearing a helmet. taking a header down one of those staircases or something would definitely suck and your head would NOT win at the conclusion of the fall.
I've been seeing people all week skating back in the paddock and whatnot. No helmets anywhere and they've beefed it into traffic lanes. What amazes me is how they seem to be immune to road rash.
