Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his Italian counterpart Matteo Renzi agreed Friday to accelerate efforts toward the signing of a bilateral pact to allow the exchange of military intelligence and terrorist information, Japanese government officials said.

Abe and Renzi also agreed during their talks in Rome to start discussing cooperation on defense technology and crisis management, the officials said.The envisioned "information protection pact" would make it easier for Japan to collect information on terrorist activity in northern Africa.
