Possibly a promotion at work moving to outside sales account manager for golf courses.

So I live in Vegas, camp, mountain bike, work on my house, and participate in general shenanigans. Which leads me to Raptors. Which in the grand scheme of things are probably overpriced.

At the same time though since I would use it for work, I can't have a balls to the wall pre-runner, dont want a slammed street rod (since I have a mustang)... I could get a lesser truck for lesser cash but it would be lesser fun.

Anyone got suggestions or ideas? It would need to be streatable, but modifying certainly isn't out of my realm of possibility. Minor rock crawling and blasting desert roads as well as 4 person usability and at least partial bed use are important.

Raptor. Overpriced, maybe. Still seems pretty perfect for what you are talking about. It's very Vegas. :)

The Raptor is not overpriced. When you look at a similarly equipped F150 FX4 MSRP, it's a downright steal. A base FX4 with the 6.2 and a 3.73 locking rear diff costs just a few hundred less, and the Raptor nets you so much more truck. It's perfect for Las Vegas, and they ride like a giant marshmallow steamroller on the road.

Well, for starters, it's a Toyota. It may be a "half assed" attempt with great Bilstein shocks, but I guarantee it would take anything you could imagine to throw at it. Also, the lesser version that Toyota made a couple of years ago, could stand it's ground alright with a Raptor. Plus it weighs like 1000+ pounds less, which off road is a pretty noticeable difference. Also, the price difference. You could buy one and a cheap prerunner for the weekends for the price of a Raptor.

Yes would probably sell the jeep. I would need a bed for pallets of fertilizer, PVC pipe, maybe small trees, lawn mowers and power equipment.

I have looked at the 4 door jeeps as well. If I go with the companytruck I would probably trade my 2 door in and go with a slightly modified but steatable 4 door

As Jalopnik's resident truck guy, let me be the first to tell you that rock crawling and blasting desert roads are two very different setups.

That's why people get all mad when their Raptors get tangled up on technical trails... that's not what they're built for. Just like a stock Wrangler isn't really up to the task of hauling ass over sand whoops.

That said; sure you can build a truck that can drive desert and crawl... it just won't be "extreme" at either.

Since it sounds like this is your first truck (will it be your Daily Driver?) I'd get something old/simple. Late 80's Toyota, Jeep Comanche maybe? Unfortunately your "four person" stipulation sort of forces you to to buy newer... crew cabs weren't really a thing on early fuel-injected trucks.

(Unless you want to get something REALLY cool/primative like an old International) but I digress.

What about an early 00's Frontier? Can be had with four doors, is short enough to do technical stuff, big enough to be stable at speed in the sand... I think you can even get the crew cabs with three pedals. Tacoma might be better if you've got the money, bigger aftermarket too I think.

Throw some good tires on either and I reckon you'd be surprised at what you can do.

...A lot comes down to budget. That's just what I'd do at my shopping zone ($3-$6k).

I fully understand the limits of rock crawling vs. desert blasting. I've got a crawling jeep, it's bad on the road and it's bad on dirt roads at speed. I guess i meant paths with some rocks in them more than actual rock crawling.

I'm just trying to keep it practical as I already have too many toys, and somewhat profesional as I will be using it for business. Just trying to see how extreme I could gget with an everyday truck and retain a professional appearance

I may just get a company F150, which would leave the door wide open to build a 2 seater baja/prerunner truck as a weekend toy, but that's a whole other can of worms

Def considered it. Ended up finding a comparison with the raptor from motor trend maybe? Basically they said the ram runner could blast the whoops, but was worse at cornering, worse on the road, had bad steering feel, engine/transmission/Ecu struggled to keep a gear...basically they ripped it. And I would see road use everyday unfortunately

Bilstein makes good shocks, but they aren't in the same league as the bypass shocks on the Raptor. Raptor shocks cost over 5x more than Bilstein 5100 Series. Nothing Toyota has ever built, including the TRD Pro, can come close to the Raptor off road. Not in the desert.

It is a good start, and at $30k a good deal. But I have a feeling the Taco will cost close to $35k and the Tundra TRD about $40k, which is too close to the Raptor in price and not nearly close enough in hardware.

Not close enough to Raptor territory, to not be able to buy a weekend dune buggy/pre-runner. That's why I could never justify a Raptor. I could get a capable truck and an offroad only truck for the same price.

Kinja'd!!!0

Go for the raptor and write it as a company car for your taxes. When you look at it, the raptor is a really good truck for the land out in vegas. You can have a capable machine on and off road that will help you with work and after work you can take a side excursion on some fire road or just go play in the sand on the side of the road. The main benefit I see to the raptor is that it has a warranty, and as long as you don't go blasting out jumps at 80 mph you are covered. If you don't care about warranty coverage find a contractors special F150 and then get a little Taco and turn it into a prerunner to satisfy your needs. But you can still probably work out the Raptor to be a company truck and write it off as a business expense (I'm not a business man and have no idea about it but it would be nice to do for at least a partial value of the vehicle).

Get a raptor, just do it. Just don't pay the silly dealer added on price if your dealership is a dick and does that shit.

Kinja'd!!! CRider > Jordan and the Slowrunner, Boomer Intensifies

Kinja'd!!!0

Do you know how much a buggy costs? A long travel Polaris RZR costs $15k+, and that's only a 2wd 2 seater. A Jeep Wrangler Sport costs $23k, and doesn't even have air conditioning. Building a real "prerunner" will cost as much as a Raptor just in parts. There's no way you can buy a full size 4x4 pickup and a comparable off road toy for less than the price of a Raptor. Off roading is an expensive sport, and the Raptor is an expensive truck- but it's a lot of truck for the money.

Kinja'd!!! Jordan and the Slowrunner, Boomer Intensifies > CRider
06/06/2014 at 20:49

Kinja'd!!!0

As a toy, I would buy used. So YES, you could buy a new Tacoma TRD Pro, and a used Pre-Runner. Not a prerunner I would race, but a toy I wouldn't mind beating up. Or you could for less money equip the Tacoma with basically the same suspension setup as the Raptor for less.

It might be worth it to buy one in riverside CA and bring into Nevada, it will save you a good chunk of change, even going as far as Orange County to find one that isn't inflated +$15,000 is worth the 6 hours total of driving.

But I have no idea how crazy Nevada is on buying an out of state vehicle and then bringing it in. I'm pretty sure they'll make you pay Nevada taxes on it, but it could be worth it shooting out a few e-mails to some dealers to see what they got and if they would be willing to work with you on pricing and the logistics of the whole DMV stuff.

Kinja'd!!! CRider > Jordan and the Slowrunner, Boomer Intensifies
06/06/2014 at 23:37

You can't compare new to used, or you have to come in under the price of a used Raptor. So used Raptor is $40k, new TRD Pro is probably going to be $35-37k, and that leaves how much for a toy? Because I know what off road vehicles cost. You can't buy shit for less than $15k.

Kinja'd!!! Jordan and the Slowrunner, Boomer Intensifies > CRider
06/06/2014 at 23:47

Kinja'd!!!0

Uh, you can compare new to new, which is what I was doing. New Raptor: 55-60k, New Taco:35-37k, used Ranger/Tacoma/Frontier/whatever Prerunner:7.5-15k, Baja Bug:2.5-???k. Plenty of room there for two. Or new Taco + TRD supercharger + multi purpose suspension = 50k or less on the high side.

Kinja'd!!! CRider > Jordan and the Slowrunner, Boomer Intensifies
06/07/2014 at 00:09

Kinja'd!!!0

Baja Bug isn't even comparable to any of these things. So say new Taco, $35k. Adding a TRD supercharger will cost $5k installed, and a decent LT kit will cost $10k installed. So that's about $50k, or what a Raptor with a few options costs.

Kinja'd!!! Jordan and the Slowrunner, Boomer Intensifies > CRider
06/07/2014 at 00:18

Kinja'd!!!0

I'll take the lighter Toyota that doesn't break as often. Plus, a raptor is more like 60k+ with very few options. And how is a Baja Bug, that has a class in the BAJA 1000, not a used offroad toy.

Kinja'd!!! CRider > Jordan and the Slowrunner, Boomer Intensifies
06/07/2014 at 00:23

How often does either truck break? I don't think either will. And if you're one of those "Japanese r bettur than Ferds durr" people just stop now. And you're comparing large pickup trucks to a Beetle with cut fenders on all terrarin tires. I mean, there's a clas for everything in some racing series but that doesn't mean you can compare a racing kart to a LMP car and call it fair.

I'm not that guy, literally every sensor is failing in my Toyota, BUT I have literally tried to break it with nothing breaking. I'm just saying the cost to run it and depreciation in the long run, is probably better on the Toyota. Also, with friends with Fords, I would be much more comfortable beating the shit out of my daily driver Toyota than a daily driver Ford. Ford has a tendency to make things overly complex (SPARK PLUGS, specialized coolant that doesn't work, radiator coolant cap, lessening the number of headbolts, the famous HPOP, Cab removal to fix anything towards the back of the engine of the trucks, etc.), so if something does break, off to the dealer you go (and chances are something broke with it).

Kinja'd!!! CRider > Jordan and the Slowrunner, Boomer Intensifies
06/07/2014 at 00:41

Kinja'd!!!0

I like old Tacos as much as anyone (they are tough trucks), but saying the Raptor can't handle a reasonable amount of abuse isn't giving it due credit. The 6.2 engine is simple to the point of being a dinosaur. It was designed for the Super Duty and is pretty overbuilt for the kind of load a Raptor can pull. Ford hasn't had a perfect track record, but I haven't heard any horror stories about the newer F150s that would turn me off them. For you, an old Taco might be better suited. For a truck to beat on and not give a fuck about, hell yes. But for Team5.0 who lives in Vegas and wants a daily driver, and something he can hit the trails with (which in Nevada is desert), take camping, hiking, throw in some mountain bikes in the back it would be perfect. It's all about having the right tool for the job. Advising him to buy a Baja Bug is just ridiculous.

Kinja'd!!! Jordan and the Slowrunner, Boomer Intensifies > CRider
06/07/2014 at 00:46

That's why I said the TRD Pro, it can go about anywhere you want, but if you want something to beat the shit out of on the side, buy the Baja along with it. Who said you can't have two toys? Especially if they cost the same as one heavier, thirstier toy.
