Recently, someone stole on of my wife's summer tires. As a result, I had find a replacement rim and tire for the one that was stolen. Local auto parts places didn't have a rim in stock, so I grabbed one from the wreckers. It's a bit rusty. Is it really worth painting it? I mean, it's going on a Cavalier, and it'll mostly be hidden by the wheel cover.

I think I'm just worried the guys at the tire place will give me a hard time.

Is it a black steel wheel? Throw a few coats rustoleum on it and call it good. The paint will last longer than the Cavalier will.

Yeah, just an ordinary black steel wheel. If I do end up painting it, I'll have to sand the surface rust off first.

Get a pair of thick gloves and steel wool and knock some of the rust out. Whatever is loose. Spray flat black and mount. There is something to be said about doing a job and doing it properly. You wont get flack from the tire mounting place unless the rim is warped or cracked even if you don't spray it.

I doubt they'd give you a hard time but you should clean it up and paint it anyways. You'll feel better about yourself.
