YIKES! I would not have sat this direction, right next to the increasingly under tension metal spokes.

Umm..... No. This is just idiotic.
Wheels must handle more than vertical loads. One must consider the lateral loads. I'm no weight weenie road cyclist. I sit firmly in the Clydesdale class and have taco'd a rear wheel with a poorly landed bunny hop. I'd bet this wheel would fail on the first lap of a skidpad.
Testing wheel strength with four bicycle wheels mounted on a car is lunacy. There are machines designed to test such loads. I suggest this fellow visit Sheldon Brown's site ( http://sheldonbrown.com/rinard/wheel/i… - may he rest in peace) for a home-spun example. He should also spend some time with Jobst Brandt's seminal work, The Bicycle Wheel .

I say torch out all wheel wells and install a set of 4. You'd get awesome fuel mileage with a set of high pressure road tires.......just don't make any sharp turns :-)
