It would have to be an American car.

I know he would want something exciting and/or comfortable (CTS-V, Corvette, Mustang, or the like) but what would make it interesting for us?

Cobalt? Chrysler 200? Elio?

I like the idea of American, because this is the quintessential American roadtrip.

However, I'd vote nothing GM from the recall period, that's for sure. We want him to come home in one piece.
