Kinja'd!!!

You've all been great at making me think twice about rubbers for the Magnum. I'm still looking. I like the Coopers, but I'm not out of the water yet, because I wont be purchasing any until I have wheels to put them on (that aren't the stock wheels).

I think !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! should be the official tires of Oppo.

I'm down to Coopers, Goodyear or Falken. Because of the wheel size, I really can't go low profile, and to be honest, wouldn't want to around here. The potholes will destroy a rim with a low profile tire. I'm happy with lots of extra meat.

Falkens? Really? Please don't. Garbage. Why not Continentals?

Because they're soft and I don't trust them to last. I live in an area where there are potholes that are deep enough to destroy a tire. I'm trying to find a set of good tires that I can afford, that I hopefully wont have to replace any time soon. Soft and hard compounds are the worst things I could go with, and I know contis are pretty soft tires.

I'm also not sold on a single brand being "it" for the car. As I've said before, I like to have options. I'm still looking at other options out there. A set of 4 tires I can barely afford wont help me if I have to replace one in a couple of months. I'm certain there can be a good balance for DD tires. Until I find the rims I want for a good price (below $80 each), I'll be searching and comparing alternatives.

In my experience, Falkens have consistently worn out faster than Continentals, and very unevenly. I have a co-worker with an is300, had been putting Falkens on it every year for the last 4-5 years because they would show cords on the inner edge, until last year that is. Put low tread wear (340?) conti's on it and they still have 75% left and wearing evenly. I also live an an area with terrible potholes. All of the people I know with conti DWS's get over 40k out of them. I get what you are saying though, I do the same kind of research before I buy something expensive. Nor would I be inclined to listen to a single nut job online who has a god complex (me).

If the cords are showing on the inner edge, I would suspect the camber is off on the car, or he's really railing into corners. I can identify tire problems very well. When it comes down to new tires, I'm a horrible person to ask. I know my current tires are not going to cut it past the end of july, but I'm being gentle and doing what I can to maximize what little life is left if them.

When I get the new wheels mounted, the car is going to get a front and rear alignment for camber and toe. I asked around on the LX forums, and while the Conti DWS tires got really high regards, the Falkens did as well. So did the Firestone Firehawk and Yokohama Avid Envigor. They all have different characteristics, which should go without saying, of course. I wasn't originally so happy with the idea of Firestones, but if the tire is good enough that a lot of other Magnum drivers are really happy with them, I can be inclined to join them. They've also said the Firehawks are really good in snow, so it might mean they get the win.

For the price, if the Falkens, Yokohamas or Firestones are good all-season tires, I may go for one of those. The contis are nice, but for the heavy LX cars, they get somewhat mixed reviews. A smaller, lighter car like the is300 will really work a tire differently, that's why I don't want to just go for a tire that might not really suit the car, especially because from what other magnum drivers have told me so far, most of them have moved away from contis completely, or they're using tires beyond my budget currently.

By all means, I value the information you're giving, even if I can be a bad listener (so my girlfriend likes to say). I would have your co-worker get their alignment checked, and maybe slow down on the corners too.

Now if only I could source some wheels half as easily as finding different tire options for the wagon....I'm waiting for an email about a set of 4 re-finished wheels, hopefully in the $270 range shipped. Since when did steelies get so hard to find?
