Look. For. Rust.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

Ideally find somebody who knows a little about British cars, especially Spits, and bring him along.

I live in California so it would have to be 1975 or older to avoid have to pass a smog test. That being said $500 is not a bad price if it runs and is drivable.

I bought a 1970 2000 MK2 for $600NZD, so about $500US and it runs great. just look for rust, definitely.

Probably not all that crazy. They've got fantastic parts availability, and are bog-simple to work on.

Rust is the thing to look for, especially on the chassis. Not a deal-breaker, you can probably pick up an entire 2nd-hand chassis for not much, but it's an added cost.

It'll be a lot of work to get it in good nick, regardless of whether it's running or not, but it's a great choice if you're looking for a first project.

but it's a great choice if you're looking for a first project.

I daily drive a '99 Mercedes W210. My motoring existence is a project.

I'm gonna check it out today, rust is the main thing I'm gonna look at

Good man :) sounds perfect

I've got a Spitfire project myself, so I should know what I'm talking about :S

Look for a tweaked chassis as well. Mine was in a minor front-end shunt and one of the bonnet supports was pushed up higher than the other.
