That looks like a car you could bet someone serious money to try to keep straight at full throttle. And make a fortune.

How about this official rear-engined Corvette that never was?

Kinja'd!!!

An excerpt from one of my The Forgotten Concept Cars of the year posts:

1964 Chevrolet XP-819 Corvette Concept; the only rear-engined Corvette in existence. A race car driver Smokey Yunick obtained this car to design a new race car, but it was never completed. As a result, GM ordered Yunick to cut the car into pieces to prevent their competitors from getting their hands on it. It was sold at some point to a GM dealer named Steven Tate. Tate had absolutely no idea what it was until he saw the "XP" codename in the VIN. In 2002, Mid America Motorworks started the full restoration with an estimate complete date set for this year (2014).

My husband just pointed out that the hood was open. That's why it looked like a custom job. * blames self for being literally blind *

Engines behind the driver in a Corvette. Do not like.

i met a guy who has one of the continuation Cheetahs. Thing has a stupid fast 525hp engine, and will successfully blow the doors off the car around 150mph because it has no windows.

its really funny to watch people get in and out of it, because its a real process.

Well, GM built that prototype solely to experiment with a different engine location. It turned out to be not beneficial (poor centre of gravity and handling), so GM abandoned the project and handed it over to Yunick.

They tried mid-engine several times, actually. It was hoped by the Corvette team that they could get the go-ahead to make the C4 a mid-rear Corvette equipped with a twin-rotor Wankel. The concept was called the "Aerovette." Business took a nosedive, and that's why that didn't pan out. Personally, as Jalop as the car would have been, I'm glad it didn't. Having the engine in front and a cockpit like a fighter is what made me like the car in the first place.

I would like to have seen how this would have evolved and performed against it's European contemporaries.

I was mainly kidding, I wouldn't want a real corvette to be rear engined but these LMP cars are cool at least

I can't recall, did those actually race as "Corvettes" or did they give themselves different names?

The XP-819's engine was mounted behind the rear axle. Most European rear-engined supercars have engines mounted in front of the rear axle. They're completely different, so it's like comparing apples with oranges. If the XP-819's engine was mounted in front of the rear axle, then that's something I'd like to see.
