Good luck keeping it on the road, they can get really expensive to maintain, I hear.

And by that, I mean a friend of mine got rid of his a couple weeks ago because miscellaneous stuff on it needed replacing. It was pretty well maintained and looked great, crap just kept going out and it was time to get rid of it.

They were strong vehicles when they're new, but as the years pass, they will need attention. We've had a first gen R53 in the family for very nearly nine years now. More and more things need to be worked on or replaced. Well, it's a BMW.

The first gens are easy to tune and you can get some JCW parts for cheap.

So unreliable! If you get this gen, do not get a non-s. r53 "s" is a must. The 6-speed is the only transmission that won't grenade. But as far as I can remember, common problems are superchargers, water pumps, head gaskets, ignition coils, power steering pumps and fans, radiator fans, control arm bushings, motor mounts, mushroomed strut towers. That being said, I would take an r53 over an r56 any day.
