So....about that Cosworth BRZ.

$2799, just for the catback exhaust and 20 horsepower (though squeezing 20 extra horsepower out of an n/a 2 liter engine with just a catback sounds highly dubious).

Like I said, opting for stage 1.2 (overpipe w/spherical resonator) and stage 1.3 (header) will be ridiculously expensive.

They also announced a 380 horsepower package. Probably for the cost of a second BRZ.

At this point, if you own Toyobaru and want more power, you really have to ask yourself just how much is that warranty worth to you?

I love the Toyobaru, I really do. Just more as a platform, and less of a package. I'll buy one when they're dirt cheap, and the warranty will be irrelevant. Give it some boost, and the entire car will come alive.

That's pretty much how I feel. There is a used one in my future.

For sure. I have a hard time justifying a almost $30k car with 230hp, when I can get a C6 for less. Sure, it weighs more, but it has double the power.

Now, snag a BRZ for 10k, and suddenly it's far more appealing. Just have to find the right lovingly cared for example.

20 hp is a 10% gain, so not bad, plus the bonus of EL headers and, if I recall, it comes with a tune to recalibrate the computer for the different flow pattern, which is where most of the gain comes from i would guess. 7.14 hp per grand is a pretty poor hp/$ investment though, but the aftermarket usually is.

Wait, where are you getting prices? I am super curious how much catback+headers+spherical res will cost

I like the idea of it, but I think the execution could have been better.

Really I just wish it had been a smaller turbo engine rather than the NA it got. I know some people hate turbos, but the low torque is what hurts the car, not the low horsepower.

200 hp is plenty, but 151 lb-ft of torque is not enough.

That's what I'm worried about. I plan on picking up a used BRZ/FRS in a couple years, but I'm scared that it'll be damn near impossible to find a decent/clean example. Even if it looks clean externally, I have a feeling most of them will still have been thrashed really hard.

I don't see a catback freeing up 20 horsepower from a 2 liter n/a engine even with a tune...hell, even most turbocharged engines won't see that much of a gain from just a catback. Typically the restriction in the exhaust is between the exhaust ports and the cat. And $2799 is crazy. That does not include the uppipe or the headers. I bet with the two of those you're looking at over $5k, possibly $6k. That's ridiculous.

if it were bobs custom exhaust inc I wouldn't believe it, but cosworth its pretty trustworthy. If they quote a number its likely dyno proven.

Stage 1.2 and 1.3 prices weren't announced yet. Just 1.1

Saw it on that other automotive news site..

That's where I'd agree as well, they just don't seem like a very urgent engine at all. I wouldn't have minded if it was a quick revving high rpm engine, but it's kind of wheezy in the mid/top end. Twin-scroll turbos are great, it would have done wonders for the torque curve; very early torque and such a short spool that it practically negates any downsides, as well as making it charge to redline.

I've only driven them, but you own one. You know this firsthand. I think they're phenomenal cars, and they feel amazing to drive; I just want more feels when I put my foot down.

Agreed, that is a lot of money. I mean you do get a bit more than just the catback; upgraded intake filter and an EcuTek tune. However, I like the Crawford Performance exhuast quite a bit. Wait for them to develop a header (or buy one of the others out there), and I'm guessing you can get a full exhaust system w/ a good tune at a local shop for a decent but less than $2,799 (and a lot less than Cosworth's 1.3 stage will cost).

It's just part of the used car game, really. You'll find some good examples, but some are going to be beat to shit. Some will have been driven hard, but because of it received important maintenance that others haven't. As long as it comes with receipts, I don't think I'd mind.

The car with 30k miles that has never had an oil change will be in far worse shape than the one that was autocrossed a few times a year.

What is it with oppo lately and thinking I own cars I don't?

I don't have a Toyobaru. I've driven one though, and the power was uninspiring at best. It was a fun car but it felt so anemic.

I actually was pressured (by my physician...) cross shop a BRZ and a base Cayman against my C6 before I bought it...I like everything on the table there, but, power won.

Could have sworn you owned one, but I suppose there's worse insults to be had :)

Anemic is the right word for it. My 250r had an engine 1/8th the size that was more entertaining to rev.

Handling is great for the Cayman and BRZ, but the C6 can handle great with a little work, and isn't a bad package to begin with. American push-rod v8 getting 28mpg highway is pretty neat, too.

I think it's bullshit. I think you're right, most of the extra output from stage 1 is the tune...they just bundle the catback and tune together to make the output look more impressive and massively mark up the price.

The exhaust parts are fabricated by Nameless Performance. Quality stuff, but even on their own site they say their $1000 catback system does not yield any peak horsepower gain (though it does improve midrange torque).

Heck, replacing that complicated mess of a header with a freer flowing unit only frees up an additional 5 horsepower in the 1.3 package.

sounds like they are quoting the full package [headers, tune, exhaust] as the 20 hp gain, which i would believe. Peak HP isn't too hard to gain with the right tune, the trick is to make it overall more usable, which has yet to be seen. Either way, its a lot of money for an exhaust but you KNOW they will sell a ton of them.

Kinja'd!!! Saracen > HammerheadFistpunch

20 horsepower is what they are claiming for 1.1, not the full package.

Watch the video, and they explicitly claim Stage 1.1 (catback + tune) is good for 20 horsepower, and each upgrade beyond that (Stage 1.2 - uppipe and Stage 1.3 - header) add 5 hp each.

It's okay, at least 3 people thought I bought a Corvette because I like them and JayZEight8 (or however his name is spelled) bought one 2 weeks ago.

I have a chevy sonic with a tune that takes it from 148 lb ft of torque to 200 lb ft with the press of a button while weighing about the same as an FRS, so I know first hand how much a difference torque makes. It's night and day.

the stage 1.1 shows a nice power bump all along the rev range, not just peak.

Ughh... Just got a quote from my local Subaru performance shop this morning.

Stage 1.1 $2,799.00 + $600.00 (Installation)
Stage 1.2 $3,699.00 + $840.00 (Installation)
Stage 1.3 $5,250.00 + $840.00 (Installation)

There's no way I'd pay that. Such a bummer!

Yeah, there are a few that are really expensive such as Akrapovic, Ericsson, Tubi, Eisenmann...but what they all have in common is that they sell $5k exhaust systems for high end german and italian sports cars...not $25k Subarus. It really is ridiculous.

I guess Cosworth's name magically turns the exhaust into titanium..
