I'm no pro, but I hauled my trusty Canon Rebel XT and 50mm 1.8 lens out to the rally and snapped some pictures. Hope some of you enjoy them. It was a really fun time. Most of these pictures are basically same shot with different cars, all from the same stage. It was a small spec area with a lot of people, so I had to shoot through various native vegetation and dodge waving arms, children up on shoulders, and marshals. My brother and I came home with some really nice sunburns, but it was well worth it.

An almost identical twin (1995 M3) to my car going wide around all the corners. Love seeing these guys. The took fifth overall, which was pretty cool.

Kinja'd!!!

The E-Crew being awesome as usual. Always ready to go at a moment's notice.

Kinja'd!!!

The scoring Baja is pretty cool too.

These pictures and a few more on 500px: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

All photos shot in manual mode at f/2.8 and somewhere around 3200/s. Half of them were manual focus, then I got lazy and switched to auto. Edited minimally in Lightroom to boost clarity and adjust levels slightly. Thanks for browsing!

You're welcome. How close were you able to get to the cars?

Really close when they were entering or sitting in service. Actually, my brother and I sat in the Dirtfish Subaru. At the stage, the 50mm lens is just a little closer view than "normal vision" so what you see in the pictures (didn't crop anything) is almost where I was. The camera got really dusty, I would say the tree I was standing in (yes, in, that's why there are branches in most pictures) was about ten feet away from the back of that focus. 15ft max.

It was awesome. I wasn't able to volunteer this year due to time commitment, but next year I'd like to be there volunteering all four days.

A day of setup/registration, a day of recce and two days of stages. For this rally, anyway. In the bigger events (Oregon Trail, STPR, etc.) there more days of rallying and much more setup.

This BMW won the 2WD class at Oregon Trail Rally at the hands of Ramana Lagemann

Yeah! I went to my brother's house where they have fancy cable TV and we watched the NBCSN coverage yesterday, cheering whenever we saw them. My brother was in disbelief that it won the 2WD class, after just getting over his disbelief at its standings in the Olympus Rally. The other M3 (The Hintz brothers') didn't start at Olympus for some reason. That made me sad.

How about those jackasses on the TV show with the Porsche. What a couple of tools ;)

OH yeah, I saw this one guy get into the co-driver's seat and pointed to him and told my bro "hey that guy sucks, watch them drive off a cliff!"

(Actually I just claimed I knew the guy and that he once invited me to a thing in Oregon that I wanted to go to a whole lot.)

I see the roll cage in this one, but I don't notice anything on the rest; was this a semi-stock rally?

I'm pretty sure they all have roll cages.

Looks awesome. I think you got all the settings just right. For next year, if you can rent a 70-200 f/2.8, you could make some awesome images. Especially if you can get to the other side of the corner and see the cars as they head toward you. Or, if you feel like buying, the 70-200 f/4 can be found on ebay for like $500. That was the third lens I bought and it is really quite good, even at f/4.

Thank you! Next year, I hope to borrow someone's camera and lens. I have a friend with a 40D, which is a ginormous upgrade from my body. I borrowed it when I went to England a few years ago. Not sure what lenses he has, but any primes would be better than my Plastic Fantastic. I wonder if 70-200 would be too long, though. Especially if I'm inside the corner. I'd rather go with something like a 24mm, 40mm and 80mm. Also depends if the body I borrow is full frame or not.

I do slightly regret not crossing the track to get the inside of the corner, but you have to make that decision pretty early.
