If the 2001 Honda Prelude was RWD, it would be a Scion FRS. It would weight about 3000 lbs, have 200hp and 161 lb ft of torque. HONDA HAD SO MUCH POTENTIAL FOR A GRRAT CAR!!!!!

It would also rival the corvette in price since the accord based chassis would no longer be around and they'd have to come up with one from scratch since the 2001 prelude dates back to 1996 which was before the S2000 came out. So no, they really didn't have FR-S potential. The prelude was a luxury coupe. Weirdly enough, it got compared to the Buick Riviera, Lexus SC300, and Lincoln Mark VIII. People forget that the prelude was a very expensive car when it was new.

An ITR would hand the FR-S its ass on a platter with less horsepower, torque, and being FWD.

If the 1994 Honda del Sol was RWD, it would shame the FRS, S2000, Miata, Prelude, etc. because it weighs only 2400 lbs. Sure it only has 160 HP and 111 lb. ft., but being a Honda motor it would not be hard at all to squeeze another 40 out of it.

Exactly right. A lot of people forget how much weight can be saved through fwd packaging.

Wasn't the Del Sol originally destined to be a mid-rear engined layout from the start, in an effort to ape the MR2?

By most accounts, the Prelude actually was a great car, even being FWD.

Nah, it was actually just a refresh of the CR-X...a refresh that turned into more of a roadster.

And then they killed the prelude model.... Because the civics and accords were all people cared about.
Yes we all wish our preludes were rwd, but thats not why we bought them. Its because like you said, have enough power to have fun, in a comforting cabin, on a great handling chassis. Its amazing how much thought was put into the design of the prelude chassis. Its the reason I have come to love honda. I have to say the car used it potential to the max. The prelude, from 1979-01 were all FWD. It would have been a legacy thing to change it up to rwd. Not many models which span that long of production time go from fwd, to rwd.

The ITR is a purpose built 'street fighter' for lack of better description. Its not luxury by any means. No doubt it would give the frs a run for its money, but it might not be the fairest of comparisons. Honestly, im not sure what we compare the ITR to because its in a league all its own. Not many other stripped down fwd, 100 horsepower per liter, lightweight production cars were made.

Well, I suppose a GS-R would be a fairly good comparison in the twisties.

In my opinion, a base model FR-S is a lot closer to the idea of the ITR than it is to the Prelude. The Prelude was always meant to be a personal coupe or front-drive GT car. I'd say it was something more along the lines of a Monte or modern A5 (both cars I love) than the kind of budget racer that the ITR and FR-S are supposed to be.

I guess its hard to do any comparison between these cars, they are just so different even though they are trying to occupy the same market. In terms of dailying, the ITR is pretty stripped down, even to the point of missing insulation/lack there of. The FRS/brz are up to spec with most modern conveniences. And ITR isnt convenient, persay (imo). Its bare bones with a purpose to be the best fwd of its era. I just think the frz lacks that same power punch the ITR could deliver. IF power output could have been slightly higher, a frsbrz vs itr race would be incredible to watch.
After 2 years of prelude ownership, i still cant think of something to compare it to if im honest. Because, its performance compares to completely different cars than when you want to compare its build quality and comfort.
I think were on the same page though, im just kinda splitting hairs a bit. Were both honda geeks anyways ahah.

That might be a bit fairer. At least on a performance level. The brz/frs have all pre 01 hondas beat on comforts and conveniences.

I would hope so, 80's-90's Honda's idea of comfort was akin to sitting in one of those plastic childrens' chairs.
