My daughter is awaiting a judgement in her divorce case. She has no money.

She called me and said her brakes were down to metal. I told her to buy a cheap set of pads and put them on for now until she could afford to replace the rotors and the pads with better quality. I told her to drive it slowly and apply brake to get the pads to conform to the rotors. She has someone that will do the work gratis. ???

Depending on the car the O'napazone has decently cheap rotors that are decent quality. Not getting new rotors isn't the end of days though, unless the pads got down to the metal backing plate and started eating metal off the rotors themselves. I don't really like to use the cheap "lifetime" pads at all because they just don't work that well, if all she can afford are the crap $20 pads right now let her know that it should be considered a temporary fix. That is my opinion at least, I believe that brakes are one area should not be cheaped out on unless it can't be avoided.

Yeah, metal to metal. I did explain to her this was a very temporary fix. Rotors are done/finished. (I did this fix on a big Lincoln years ago. 5000 lb car and they worked for 6 plus weeks) But at least this will get her another month. Yes, explained it to her it was a temporary fix, but it will work for now. She has kids to haul around. Mediocre brakes are better than none. Thanks.

Yeah, well hope for the best and as long as the rotors aren't too far gone they should be all right for a little bit, the rough surface will chew the pads up very quickly. If the person doing the work would be willing to scuff up and try to take some roughness off the rotors that could help as well. Not to sound like a broken record, but since she'll be hauling kids around she needs to drive even more cautiously and plan stops ahead. Hope it all works out for the best for her.

She listens to my advice pretty good. I hope the person doing the work will know that or at least call me. Yeah, the cautious driving is another topic we touched on. Thanks for your input and concern Squid, I appreciate it.

if money is super tight you could run to pull-a-part and find the same model and see if the pads are in better shape and nab them for next to nothing. Not recommended, but might be a better solution than damaged rotors.

Just talked to the person doing the work. He said that the entire pad, including steel backing plate, was gone. Caliper pucks are ruined. I told him to go to the U-Pull and get a used caliper or rebuild it himself.
