Anyone ever upgrade wheels/cassette on an old (1981) road bike? Any issues I might have? I already have the wheels fit on, I just have to go get a cassette, new chain (going from 6 to 9 gears out back) and tires..I think that's all I need now. Any advice?

If you have them fit on the bike already, you've avoided the biggest problems, spacing, diameter, and dishing. There's a good chance that a chain narrow enough to fit on your relatively modern 9-speed cassette will be too narrow for the older, thicker chainrings up front. And you may not be able to get new, thinner chainrings to fit the original cranks (by bolt circle or by spacing). And new cranks likely won't fit the old bottom bracket. So, just be aware/ready for some additional money/parts action. Enjoy the newly refreshed ride!

Pretty much what BoulderZ said. The chain that matches the new cassette is probably too narrow for the chainrings, so you will probably (>95% probability) need to change those as well.

i have some spare 9 speed chain I can check with before I buy the cassette. If itbdoesnt work, I'll just run a 7 speed cassette with a spacer.
