Yesterday, I determined that despite sitting in a basement for the past 7 years, the battery on my scooter will still hold a charge and freely turn over the motor. Also the motor turns over freely and has decent (not great, but not bad) compression. Now yesterday, no matter what I tried, I could not get the starter button to work, same story today (I was just shorting across the starter relay to turn over the motor). Then it just started working and from this I can only conclude the following.
Well after those helpful little critters sorted out my starting system woes, I was able to determine that the ignition system is also fully functional. This leaves fuel, and I pulled the fuel tank and carburetor. So wish me luck everybody, I'm about to crack open a 30 year old carburetor and tank that have sat in a basement for 7 years with what almost HAS to be ethanol fuel. This should be fun

I guess your battery has... decayed?

Bad contacts on the starter button. Also, get some guitar strings for those pilot jets. Always the pilot jets...

Surprisingly no... Turned over the motor for a solid 5 minutes today without showing any signs of discharging.
Now the fuel system might very well be another story, lots of ...decay in there I imagine

Hey, I just met a guy that has one of those too. I told him about yours, and he wants to know where you plan on getting parts for it....Anyway, about the electric start...forget it, just use the kick starter if the aliens change their minds.

Sadly mine is a 1985 (the only year of electric start only), and I'll be buying most parts from either ebay or HERE
God I wish I had a kick starter, but the little starter motor does a damn good job of turning the engine over, nothing like my old Yamaha XV750.

I wonder if you could buy one for an 84 and retrofit it to your bike.....hmmmmmm

Already looked into it, 86 and 87 drop right in
earlier than that, not so much
I'll keep my eye out for a cheap parts motor, but the electric will likely work fine (while being a lot less "cool")
