Kinja'd!!!

I've seen these big ugly rubber disks on wheels of some really high end luxury cars lately (S-Class Mercedes and BMW 7 Series). I always forget to snap a picture and I can't seem to find out what they are online, so I got bored and modeled it. Anybody know what these unholy things are?

Kind of like the things Block has on the front wheels of his Fiesta on occasion?

Brake inserts, the Porsche 956 and 962 used them to cool the hubs down. Also used as device to lower a car's drag coefficient by smoothing out the wheel but still allow some brake cooling.

What are they called again? Turbo wheels?

Also, would they really be necessary on cars like S Classes?

I'd guess, low-drag eco-ness, a security device, impact protection or some other such thing. I doubt they're brake coolers like others have suggested, because why would you need that when you're gliding around in a luxury car?

Very cheap plastic? Might prevent curbing new wheels? Shipping protection?

I searched for them as cooling brake wheels

They look like protective covering from the dealership to me. If they were behind the face of the rim, they would be brake dust protectors.

yeah that's my thought, also my model is not an oversimplification, there are no fins or complex geometry just a big rubber/plastic UFO shaped disc.

I doubt that, the ones I'm speaking of have no fins and look EXACTLY like I have modeled in my picture

This was along the lines of what I was thinking, but isn't the primary damage point of wheels usually around the lip?

No, big ugly slabs of plastic/rubber exactly as I modeled.

Those are for snow chains so they clear the rim and won't damage it. Supposed to be taken off after winter so you don't look like a tool.
