4.2
"A tribute to Pavarotti" -James May. This is how he interpreted the sound of this engine on Top Gear. The same engine that made an appearance in a car that Jeremy Clarkson said was "without fault". Yes, this is the 4.2 Litre V8 from the Audi RS4 and the Audi R8.
Power is a solid 444 hp. with 317 lb.-ft. of torques. Yay Torque! But the absolute best thing about this marvel of engineering is the 8,250 RPM Redline with the wonderful noise from the rear that accompanies it. This is a car to respect, and even more impressive is the fact that this engine made Jeremy Clarkson prefer the RS Audi than the M powered Beemer.
So tell me Opponauts, what is the best 4.2 Litre Engine?

The 4.2 jeep inline 6. Why? because it is partially based of an AMC engine that's why.

Now I know for sure that somebody is going to reply with the Jag XK6 4.2 litre variety.
In any case, that's wrong because the 4.2 didn't run nearly as smooth as the 3.8 because Jag took the lazy route when boring up the 3.4 and the heads don't match up with the pistons on the 4.2, as you can see in the picture. The 3.8 apparently as far as they should've gone. But they went further. And the picture up top is the sad result. Also, totally a missed opportunity for twinspark.

Yeah I love them they were made a short drive away from me. I am trying to now get an Eagle as insurance for a Rambler is crazy expensive.

It weighed nearly 500lbs and got pretty dismal fuel economy. I still love it, though.

Makes me think of this guy from back when i was on the 350Z forums a lot more. VQ35 that's been stroked out to 4.2L with twin turbos. I believe he made 760 hp.

My Dad averaged 24 in our 4WD Trailblazer, when lesser powerful Explorer's were getting mid teens. I wouldn't call it dismal. And 500 lbs is pretty light for a straight six.

As much as I love this engine, it's hard for me to say it is the best 4.2 liter engine because of tremendous amount of carbon buildup they get, requiring frequent and very expensive cleanings.
But, I can't think of any 4.2 liter engine that sounds anywhere near as good or has as much power density, so I guess it wins by default.
FYI, the B7 RS4 and R8 version developed 414hp, and the R8 was later tuned to produce 430hp. This is the ultimate version of the 4 liter V8 that was found in the first generation Audi A8.
The B8 RS4/5 actually have a different engine, based on the 5.2 liter V10 with two cylinders lopped off.

Yeah, I guess it is my favourite 4.2 engine. But you are right, you have to keep a German car as satisfied with services as you have to keep your bladder as satisfied with urinating. I made wikipedia research, but wasn't sure what the power stat actually was, thanks for the heads up.

"The Jag engine", XK6, made for 4 decades, from 1966 as an official 4.2 I6 although the 3.8's had been bored out to 4.2 for racers before that.
It's pure, it stood the test of time and it is very very significant in Jaguar's history.
