Remember when people actually used other search engines? When I first got online (in 1997), I used Lycos, because Lycos was actually a thing then. For awhile after that, I used MetaCrawler, which was supposedly cutting-edge. And then Google took over, and nothing else has been relevant since.

I actually use Bing as my regular search engine. It's about 95% as good as Google, it looks better (and it's Ads aren't nearly as intrusive) and to top it all off - I get free cash. Every 450 points I accumulate, that's another 5 dollar Amazon Gift card I can get.

I really liked Altavista.

For me it was Ask Jeeves—>Google. That's the whole progression.
Interesting fact: Ask Jeeves was the first website I ever visited. In my life. I framed questions like, "Computer, can you really answer my questions? Thank you."

Webcrawler, Lycos, then Altavista were my goto's before the evil empire Google.
There was another before Webcrawler, but I don't recall the name.

Haha, I think I did the same thing.

I actually started using google pretty early on. I remember my neighbor who I used to hang out with all the time once showed it to me and it became my go-to.
If only I knew what investing was back then...

Altavista was what the homepages of the computers at school were back in 2000, that's what I started with. Ask Jeeves was a close second, then in 2005 I found out about Google and that's where it's been ever since.

I used Yahoo to start off, then moved to Dogpile and used that for a good while. Then for some reason I moved to Google, realized the error of my ways, and now use Bing. MREAM

Now I'm all like: Open browser—>google is already home page—>type "unicorn butt sex meme"

Yeah, that was my first one as well. It was especially useful with its Babelfish translations.

No WebCrawler? Dogpile?
That was back when no single company could ever hope to have enough servers to index the entire world wide web, but sold lots of ad space, including pop-up adds (remember those?) to raise capital.
Then Google walks into the club and says, "What up? I've got a simple unobtrusive interface!" and it was game over.*
*Game over because Google sent all my data to the US Government, that government moved me up The Kill List, and a Predator drone just launched a missile at me.

I use Bing because I'm an insufferable hipster.

Yes, very good. Plus Babelfish is one of the best-named web apps of all time.

Replace the word "Google" with "pr0n" in your story, and it seems just as believable and twice as funny.

I use Bing because they basically pay you to use it. I've gotten about 20 dollars of Amazon Gift cards in the last year or so.

Yup, that's what I've been doing that. That and Windows Phone store credit so I can remove ads from apps that I like.

The downfall of Ask.com was when they fired Jeeves. Poor bastard was just trying to earn an honest buck......Lost all respect for them after that.
Also, the fact that you would use different search engines to find different sources as well.

I was with Alta Vista, then MSN search, then Yahoo, then Google

I started with the built in Compuserve search then my progression followed yours (Lycos, metacrawler, google). Back in the Lycos days I'd search it and about 80% of the time the results would be good enough. If I just got a bunch of crap on the first couple pages I'd try some of the others. Metacrawler kind of did that for me by aggregating the results. Then Google came along and always had something decent in the first couple pages so there was no need for anything else. Now it's gotten good enough that you rarely have to click to the second page...uncanny.

All joking aside, have you noticed that "Xbox Turn Off" is the one command that basically always works? Maybe it's just how I talk...

My voice commands got much better when I moved the Kinect way far away from any of my speakers, and gave it a commanding veiw of the room - 7 feet off the ground.

Wait, I need a Kinect?
