I have a good friend that is dealing with some crap today on his '06 Altima 3.5 SE with 68K miles. Now here is the rub. He bought the car new, has had it dealer serviced since then against everyone's advice. Yesterday he brings it in, after asking them to go over the car with a fine tooth comb 2 weeks ago. They gave it a clean bill of health before he had $800 worth of work done to bring it up to snuff. However his flex pipe went to his cat this week. Bringing it back in he had them check the front end for the 6 th time, they finally found a bad control arm bushing after he ate a new set of tires up, good, but should have caught it earlier. The worst part is them entirely missing the rotten floors which will not pass inspection. A somewhat known issue with the 02-06 Altimas is the A/C condenser drain holes block up and flood the floorpans on the inside, where there is no protection. You would think they would have investigated this. No recalls on the books for this issue. Anyone else deal with this issue? My friend is bullshit right now for good reason. He brings it to the dealer knowing he is going to get every little thing found out. I think it is absolute crap. And Nissan should man up on this issue. He was hoping for another 10 years on this car which is why he is so on top of issues as they arise. (rust pic is from nissanforums.com, my friends are supposedly worse)

We traded our '07 in last June because it was starting to get crispy around the edges with a meager 87k on the clock. No more Nissans for us.

My in-laws' 05 Altima 2.5SE has not had any rust/corrosion issues. It's on its second or third transmission, and only has about 85k on it, but it hasn't had the drain plug fun

The in-laws have an '05 with about 85k on it. A transmission replacement or two and some little electrical gremlins but yeah we're kinda worried about what's to come.

That hole's like some in the '95 Range Rover I stripped for parts just last year - absolutely astounding. That was a snow truck from NY, even.

Also: nitpicking, but you mean evaporator.

Also also: my Falconchero has those floorboards beat by about 2000% (as in, they're not even there >5%), but it's from fuckin' 1963.

duh evaporator. I have ignored A/C for most of my life. If it worked great, if not, screw it!

We had the manual gearbox model, so no transmission issues as such. But the rear inner fenders were crispy and rust was starting to appear in the paint on the lower doors.

Don't you have the same motto for women?

I'm in the middle of doing submittal paperwork for two glycol-cooled systems, for which the condenser specs have to be correct for a given fluid entry and exit temperature, specified for R404A (so I had to re-request the specs I had for R134A), and for one of them, with additional information for 35% propylene glycol vs. over 40% to ensure freeze protection.

Kill me.

Oh dang, guess we could probably be thankful for living in The Land that Rust Doesn't Care to Reach

But I know mother in law is starting to get paranoid about the car. She says the check engine light keeps coming on at random and this/that/the other. It may just be the fact that she's jealous - her daughter has a truck and she doesn't - or it could be indicative of other upcoming issues

We see it on pretty much every Altima traded in here. Since it's not a "structural component" according to WI vehicle laws, we don't HAVE to fix them. Silly, really.

damn now that is crazy. Only structural for your feet!

Eight years old with only 68k miles and that rusty? That's horrible. It would never pass inspection here.

My understanding of automobiles leads me to believe that ALL the metal in a unibody car is structural.

But what do I know?

one thing I know from inspection in Maine, is that if there is a perforation in the body of the car it is a safety hazard due to exhaust being able to enter the car. That is all I have to know

The only relatively modern car I can think of that could, having not been horribly abused, rust quite as badly in that amount of time is the old Ford Ka. I think they kept selling them until 2008, and they rust like nothing else.

When I read the preview of your post I knew you were going to mention the Ka. Rust galore on those. I see very few in traffic nowadays compared to how successful they were. That said, turn of the century Mazdas and the Ford Focus are overly prone to rust as well I believe, just not as bad as the Ka. And let us not talk about Mercedes vans.

Fiestas from the same era had similar problems, somewhere between the Ka and the Focus. The Ka's just especially egregious, because they were still selling it as late as 2008. You still see plenty of Mk 5 Fiestas and Mk 1 Focii around, though.

It's a real shame; I've always quite liked the look of the SportKa.
