It did! If I had to pay Canadian gas prices I think I would have had a heart attack. Since the gas prices are in liters it isn't easy to just look at a sign and understand exactly how much it costs (~$5.30/gallon of 87). Not wanting to pay foreign transaction fees on my credit card and having a limited amount of Canadian currency I filled up in Port Huron. I proceeded to get 38mpg in a 2012 Subaru Legacy. I ended up with over 600 miles on that tank of gas. I stopped in Lansing on the way home, but turns out I had enough gas to make it all the way home.
I didn't average 38 for the entire trip though. I averaged 33.3 for the entire trip which is still damn impressive. I got better than 38 when I entered Canada thanks to their 62mph speed limit. Not wanting to risk a run in with the local police I didn't push my speed. I didn't know if 5, 10, or 20kph was the acceptable push to the limit. 38mpg from an AWD car over 300 miles is pretty damn sweet.

You cleverly avoided the GTA. Speed limit signs there are mere suggestions. OPP seem to just let the congestion work it's magic on speeders, most of the time.

If I have the Jeep, I don't take it over 75mph on the highway anyway, but if I have the motorcycle or a company car in rural two-lane Ontario, I keep it right under 90 to avoid the max penalty on the off chance I get pulled over and can't weasel my way out with "speedo error" or "whoops, forgot that was KILOMETERS!" /idiotAmerican

GTA = Greater Toronto Area.
OPP != 3/4s of Oppo. Ontario Provincial Police.

Where did you go? We sometimes go to northern MI in the summer and take the Niagra Falls -> Port Huron route as it's much shorter than driving through Ohio etc. Fill up with gas in Buffalo somewhere and it's an easy 200 miles to Canada. Never had to fill up with gas in canada on that route. Sometimes stop for food though.
Other times we'll go into CA in northern NY or VT and spend a night somewhere along the way, and dip back in at Sault Ste Marie. That's the "more adventurous" way but we'll definitely have to buy gas in CA on that route.

About 10kph over is the acceptable overage for speed limits, or 30kph in Alberta.

Now I'm curious, where in northern Michigan do you go? I went to Michigan Tech in Houghton and have spent a lot of time driving through the UP.

Not as far as the UP. The extended family has a cottage on the water north of Petoskey in Harbor Springs. It reminds me I never posted this picture - one of my favorites. (from 2007)
edit - can't figure out how to link to google maps anymore but search it for "tunnel of trees" and someday drive Rt 119 north from Petoskey. Well worth it.

I just assumed you were heading to the UP since you mentioned crossing at Sault St. Marie. I've not spent a lot of time around Petoskey, but pretty much anywhere along the lakes in Michigan is beautiful country.

Yes indeed. You inspired me to kick off a summer road trip planning post on Oppo though!
