Went to check out that NA that I found on craigslist. It was pretty rough, but seemed mechanically sound. Overall, I can see why everyone on here likes them (though my FR-S feels way more precise). It was eerie to drive a car that communicates so much to the driver, and I honestly felt like I was driving a toy among all the giant lifted trucks in my area. I'm pretty sure I'll have one in my driveway in the near future.
...Just not this one, between the high mileage (I'd never seen a Miata with nearly 200K miles), salvage title, slight notchiness going into second gear at high RPMs, and the fact that the fucking hood wouldn't close all the way (that won't pass tech), the seller and I couldn't come to a final price.

Yeah, even for a hoon mobile that one seemed a little rough around the edges.

Not really fair to compare your brand new car to a 20+ year old car as far as "precision".
All the rubber on that car needs to be replaced!
I'm in the process of doing this myself. Doing a shifter overhaul was a huge improvement alone.

Well, I got him down to $1K, but that still seemed a bit high for me so I walked. Personally I think the sweet spot for a car in this condition would be around $900.

yeah, even if the Miata was brand new the 185/60R14 on the Miata vs 215/45R17's on the FR-S would effect steering feel and precision a whole bunch. Some lightweight 15" rims on the Miata would probably bring them up to about even as far as steering feel goes.

I guess I just had it up on a pedestal, sort of like when I went to see The Dark Night after hearing everyone talk about how life changingly awesome it was.
And as for the shifter, I doubt anything will ever eclipse the feel of my FR-S, I've replaced every bushing with aluminum (it feels like your reaching your hand into the gearbox and manipulating the gears directly!).

Well that's my goal for the summer, hitting all those cones repeatedly with my FR-S feels pretty abusive, so I want to get myself another capable car that I don't really have to care too much about damaging.
I have like 15 different craigslist notifications set up to email me whenever things like miatas, rx7s, 240SXs, etc come up at a good price.

FYI, standard Miata shifters are notchy by default but the 6-speeds are the worst. I just redid my plastic shifter bushing with an aluminum one and changed out the turret oil, while it shifts a lot more precisely, it's still notchy.

There was a nice solid "click" into every other gear, second was giving me some bad vibes though.

Yup, That sounds about right for a car in that condition. I also wonder what kind of accident that it went through, and still managed to look like that even after it was "Reconstructed."

Was a recent accident (the guy selling it bought it a few weeks ago from an insurance auction). Honestly either the front or side dents would be enough for an insurance company to total a 1991 car.
