The Jeep cartoons came from 1936. The army Jeep name was coined in 1939. The Jeep name come from the Jeep in the cartoon, notice the spelling is identical.

Jeep is not an acronym for General Purpose. Jeep comes from Popeye's creator and he doesn't get enough credit for it.
