Looking for 2x1GB laptop sticks of DDR PC2700 or PC3200 RAM for the T42. The cheapest I've found is $18 on eBay but... the fact that I recently scored 2GB DDR2 RAM for *free* really makes me think it's not worth spending more than a few bucks on. Anyone have it lying around? Thanks.

You're in luck, I happen to still have my old T42! I just opened up the external bay on the bottom, and it's got a 1GB SODIMM DDR stick. I'll have to find my precision screwdrivers and open up the case, but I believe the internal bay has the same thing.

Lol this makes me laugh...I remember I scored 16 gb for my MBP about a year and a half ago for like $73 shipped from NewEgg. Was pissed that I missed the sale a week earlier for like $60. RAM is so damn cheap now it's crazy.

Now RAM is a bit more expensive. I scored 32GB DDR3 RAM for my laptop for $160 in late 2012. I bought 2x(2x8GB) kits. One single kit now is $140 on newegg, where I bought it originally.

Will do. BTW, since you're the Thinkpad expert, do you happen to know why the RAM access was split up like that? With one stick under a hatch but the other one you have to rip apart the machine to get to?

Just takes a few screws to take off the keyboard. I think it's just cause the T42 is a relatively thin ThinkPad so they squeezed the RAM under the keyboard instead of doubling it on the bottom.

Hmm interesting. I wonder if DDR3 will get more expensive once DDR4 comes out and becomes wide-spread.

Definitely will. DDR2 RAM prices skyrocketed shortly after DDR3 was released.

That's what I was thinking of. Funny how technology works.

Nibby I finally found my tiny screwdrivers and opened up the T42. The internal RAM stick is only 512mb. Do you still want that one? Are there any other parts you want? Wireless card? 56k Modem? Cooling fan?

No thanks... I have 2x512mbs in there already. Everything else is in working order, thanks though.

Ok. I'll shoot you an email so you can give me an address to mail the 1gb stick to.
