I've ended up in an argument now.. About the Heckler & Koch G3 rifle..

I say it's a powerfull rifle, not the most acurate but good enough. The people I'm debating this with claim that the G3 have way to much recoil to actually hit ANYTHING..

Sure, it's an 7.62 x 51, but it's not THAT bad, keep it at single fire and learn how to breath between shots and you'll be OK. I trained with this rifle when I was in the army, and I had a hit percentage that qualified me as a "good shooter".

Is the G3 considered a shitty gun?

Have the people you're debating shot this gun and used it?

I hardly could be called a gun lover, but I've done my fair share of shooting in my time, with a reasonable degree of accuracy. I've always been of the impression that there's no bad gun, only a bad shooter who's not able to adjust to a gun's eccentricities.

Have those people ever fired a snub-nose .357 magnum?

If not, then they don't know recoil.

I'd say they have not, they're mostly American, and the G3 ain't that prevalent in the US as far as I know.

That said, a gun can be unreliable, that I'll buy. But "it doesn't shoot straight?" No.

Bonnie Parker of "Bonnie & Clyde" fame weighed around 90 pounds, and her weapon of choice was the Browning BAR, which fired the .30-06 cartridge full-auto.

it's solid I've been told. I started on FNs. Basically the Canuckistan FAL. 7.62 NATO. Semiauto recoil is less than a locked breech type rifle. I've fired the Lee-Enfield .303. It's really accurate but the kick is like a mule compared to the FN.

You make what you hit stay still with 7.62. 5.56 makes the target dance. G3 in video games may suck.... that could be the audience? Good stance would deal with keeping on target. Once the round is out who cares about the recoil?

Kinja'd!!!0

Sure, but she used it more like we use (or used to use) machine guns. Not to actually HIT anyone, but to keep people at bay. A rapid fire gun won't hit that much, it's more that the enemy will hear the fire and hide ;)

Recoil has NOTHING to do with accuracy unless you mess up the trigger squeeze trying to anticipate it.

I think that's the thing, we mostly fired the AG-3 from Prone, as that's what you'd do in war. It's not like you run around shooting at random targets.

Not having shot this particular gun, but have shot 7.62 before, I can't understand how they would say that. Recoil is a product of the explosion and the bullet has left the barrel when you feel it. You may not be able to shoot rapid rounds, but they can be quick enough.

I've not shot the G3, but I have shot a HK91, which is the semi-auto version. Recoil was hardly bad, as I would expect in a weapon of this nature with it's roller delayed blowback action. The action eats up a fair amount of the recoil.

And as has been pointed out, recoil itself does not effect accuracy unless someone flinches due to anticipating the recoil. If they are that afraid of recoil on a semi-auto then I'd invite them to shoot my FR-8 Mauser, which uses the same round as the G3, but in a bolt action rifle. They may never want to shoot again after a few magazines through the FR-8.

Fun fact, the FR-8 was an interim training rifle used by the Spanish as they were developing the CETME rifle in the 50's. The CETME was developed into the G3 with the B variant.

My 1911 in .45 has no real recoil. Revolvers are different, they shoot harder because no force is used to reload.

Then if I were you, I'd accept the fact that you're right and unless they get their hands on a G3 at a range, don't worry about their opinion when you have facts on your side.

I believe you've stated everything correctly. Its a sufficiently accurate battle rifle. However much like the M14, full auto recoil was tough for most to be accurate with. In semi it is fine. In America they were available in the HK91 variant so some do have experience. However the importation stopped a long time ago.

The G3 is a medium power rifle. It is highly reliable and plenty accurate for its intended use. It compares favorably with the AR-10, FAL, and other battle rifles that comprise it's direct competitors. Anyone claiming it has too much recoil to hit anything is either ignorant or worse. My 11 year old niece can hit with it.

If you are in the Atlanta area, I am happy to let you try for yourself on a semi auto version. I can teach just about anyone to hit with it out to 300 yards in a short session at the range. I would take mine out of the dafe and go out to shoot 500 yds without hesitation.

I forgot a sentence there, I was a lorry driver in the airforce, so in an actual war I'd be defendig a base (in my case a field hospital). So I would not be running around.

Sorry about forgetting that part :)

Well, I haven't ever done very much shooting and maybe I'm a lousy shooter, but I once had a short-barreled (2-3/4") S&W .38 revolver that you couldn't hit the side of a barn with. It didn't have very much kick either, I think it was just inherently inaccurate. I even tried propping it against nails driven into the side of a tree and at ten yards I still wouldn't hit close to the same spot on a target two shots in a row.

What a letdown! On teevee you can drop a running guy 200 feet away with one of those while running away from explosions holding a beautiful girl in your other arm, provided you're the good guy and he's the bad guy. Also mine only held five bullets, but on teevee you can shoot dozens of shots without reloading. Who'd have thought teevee'd lie to us?

Kinja'd!!! Sir Halffast > wkiernan

I think that's just a function of being a short-barreled revolver. Anything outside of 5 yards is a total crapshoot anyway. That's an up-close-and-personal weapon.

Jokes aside, if you're shooting anything, especially a rifle, and you have any decent level of experience with guns (or just now how to ask good questions), you should be able to figure out tendencies and adjust within the space of a magazine or two.
