Chase Austin took a major hit in a crash today. Hit the inside tire barrier wall just where it meets the SAFER Barrier. Only a broken wrist.
Skip to 3 minute mark to watch it.

That's some incredible work holding it together, but it seems that by not allowing the car to spin, it caused him to smash into the wall by holding it too long. What a shame.

That could've been a lot worse, lucky bastard.

yeah but you're not thinking just let it spin. You are thinking king save it save it save it gotta race save it oh shit this gonna hurt
Safety technology is amazing.

Probably better that he spun around when he hit the tires...otherwise he was stuffing it head first through tires and into the safer barrier. Eeek. Also glad that the new chassis are coming next year for the Indy Lights. Glad he came out of that with only a broken wrist.

Not just a broken wrist - he also has a fractured right elbow and a damaged knee ligament. He's already had hand surgery, I hear.

At this day and age when we know that cars crash why after whatever 100 years does indy still have a square corner within the crash zone of one of the corners. Reading Eddie Cheever's account of how you just have no time to react in the faster older indy cars it surprises me that there is anywhere on this track where you could strike a square corner.
No matter the safer barrier or tires a square corner is going to cleave the car and the cause serious deceleration forces. This should have been a glancing blow not an accident that resulted in a car being totally separated into its constituent parts.
Still though, that was an amazing attempt at keeping it on the road!

If his steering wasn't broken he might have saved it. Watch the right wheel closely and the left a little bit... it starts off they're mostly following steering input, then there's visibly bad inward toe, and by the crash that right wheel is just doing it's own thing; you can see it's castered dead-straight ahead while he's put the left on the rack stops in right oppo....

Amazing job keeping it on the track as long as he did. Gotta let go of the steering wheel though once you know you're going into the wall. I would bet holding on is what broke his wrist.

My thoughts exactly. They haven't been paying attention in Danicaology 101.

I was thinking the same thing. Something like a safer should never end where a car can make contact.

Glad to see he's alright. A broken wrist sucks and will probably knock him out of a few races for the season, but all things considered? It's an amazing display of how effective modern safety standards are.

damn that boy can drive. Nice job of trying to save it! He was never going to be able to with that dead right wheel.

I think it's one of those situations where if he had lifted it could have caused him to spin and possibly flip once he hit the grass. But in the moment, he was likely thinking "damn tires, warm up! I'll get traction eventually..."

My question,...how are the track worker/volunteers, that were behind the barrier? Looks like someone got clipped with some debris. 40sec mark

1st) This man has incredible car control to even sorta keep it together while he is sliding around at (im assuming) 150+ mph
2) the announcer... "thats the worse possible impact". No the fuck it isn't. Scary? Yes, all crashes are scary, but worse possible impact? Far from it.

i can't even see that well on my phone right now being outside but yeah, that right tire should have been Way more turned for sure. Someone in the garage has something to answer for, unless it was a random stress fracture or something.
Broken wrist sucks

That was a hard lick. You know what he was probably saying as he was approaching the wall, "Oh shit, Oh shit, Oh shit, This is going to hurt."

Yeah, broken wrist sucks, but I did see why it was broken. In-car footage cuts to out-car footage just before he slams into the tire barrier, likely because he held the steering wheel too long.
Poor guy, hope he gets better soon.

Yeah, SAFER barriers stop, at many tracks, where the track becomes straight. In my mind, you're accelerating on the straights, ergo you would have even faster speeds in areas where there SHOULD be SAFERs at some tracks like Charlotte Motor Speedway. I know when several drivers from various disciplines got concussions hitting the INSIDE walls, they started putting SAFERs on the inside walls.
If we know the SAFER barrier saves lives, why aren't tracks completely engulfed in them??? Heck, even SAFER barriers could help save lives in highway car-and-barrier collisions like on certain parkways and in cities where roads have tall walls bordering them...

That's precisely why the replay footage took so long to air, they were editing out the actual impact that broke his wrist from the in-car footage.
