For the past week, my mom's Q7 has been lurching and vibrating inconsistently after she stops. Tuesday she brought it into the service department and they made her pay 200 bucks to figure out what the problem was. Thursday they called and said that the fuel pump was the problem but they don't know what in the fuel pump was causing the problem, so they where going to have to take out the transmission too figure out what it is. That was going to cost $2,700 in labor alone, so $3,000 just to figure out what the problem is. And the fucking warranty ran out this week so Audi won't pay for it. They didn't even have any loner cars, so we had to wait for them to get one from enterprise, which was a mini countryman S.

On a good note, I'm picking up my manual vw jetta sportswagen tdi today

What in the fuck?? They have to remove the transmission to get the fuel pump???? I think the Audi goons are taking your mom for a ride...

If it's out of warranty you can't expect Audi to pick up the whole tab, but if it's really only just out of warranty, and has full Audi service history, they ought to offer to contribute at least something. Try talking to Audi corporate rather than the dealer.

It's off warranty. That explains why Audi isn't going to cover the bill. How many miles are on it?

It's a week of warranty. The problem started a week ago. I believe she has about 80,000 with regular service.

Then you can't really blame Audi, I understand that the warranty is finished, but If they haven't issued a recall, then they have no obligation to fix it. It doesn't seem to be a very common problem though.

Bring it to another dealership. If they come to the same diagnosis and estimated costs, then they're being honest.

Nope, it sounds about right. Once upon a time, Audi had the brilliant idea of loading up one of their V8s with multiple timing chains and tensioners that go out randomly every 50k miles.

Did I mention this is the back of the engine? Yup, 50k miles away from thousands in labor costs. So taking apart the whole fucking drivetrain to get to the fuel pump sounds about right for an Audi. Also this.

My family's friends have never had great relations with VAG.

My godfather's Touareg had air suspension which collapsed and failed. So he took it back to VW under warranty and repaired it. Great. He got it back and a few weeks later, it went again. He took it back and had it repaired. He got it back and guess what happened a few weeks later? It broke again. So what VW did was take the air suspension off a brand new Touareg sitting on the forecourt and swapped it with the broken system in my godfather's Touareg. Brilliant!

Then there's our architect friend who also owns a Touareg (weirdly enough he doesn't own a Saab, but he does own a class 911 Targa), also under warranty. Whilst on a roadtrip from Galway to Dublin, we stopped at a toll booth. Upon accelerating away from the toll booth, there was an almighty bang and the whole car started to shake and rattle. Thought it was a blown tyre - nope. We limped all the way off the motorway to a nearby DART station and took the train into Dublin, leaving the Touareg at the hands of a tow company. Turns out one of the driveshafts had snapped. Ridiculous.

And my family's friends have had numerous stories of their own VWs breaking. Nothing as major as the Touaregs I mentioned, but little niggles, like electric windows failing prematurely, dials not working, little mechanical faults etc. My dad and I are now scared witless of anything VW related.

I gotta say, that surprises me. Our Flex began to develop a brake problem at around 99,985 miles. We alerted the service department at Ford by about 100, 150 miles, (100k mile warranty), told them it had been developing since pre-100k but we hadn't had time to take it in, and they put it on the warranty for us. It would've been about $1500 otherwise. I guess it's just a matter of whether the individual dealer decides to be particularly accommodating or not.

You can ask for dealer goodwill assistance. If you've been a good customer (all of your service history with them, and/or bought at least one car from them) to the dealer then they should cover everything. If you haven't been a good customer to them (no dealer service history and bought your car elsewhere) you should still be able to get at least 5% off. We once offered 15% assistance for a $4,000 bill on a car with 160,000 miles even though the customer had never serviced his car with us and never intended to again. The only reason he came to us in the first place was because we were cheapest after that 15% and he didn't trust anyone else to do the job correctly. I'm still scratching my head over that one. You can play dirty and tell them you will rate them poorly on the survey and write bad reviews online. Everydealer is very concerned with their public image and survey scores affect manager's bonuses.

My Alfa had its front bumper resprayed and the reverse parking sensors replaced for free by Alfa outside of warranty. I just wrote them a letter explaining the facts, including my local dealership address and telephone number, and asked whether it was acceptable to have cracking paint and broken sensors after 3 years and 6 months. I got a letter back, and then a phone call from the dealership asking when I wanted to book it in for the work. For the sake of $3k and 1 week, I reckon your best shot is talking to Audi direct.

I got it checked elsewhere before an they said try weren't willing to do it because it would of been to complex and they haven't done it before. I checked yesterday at a different dealership and they said the same thing. But come on it was under warranty when it got the problem and two days later it came in how is that good customer service?

They said that they will pay for it if they get the diagnosis that it's a certain part of the fuel pump, but they need that before they will take the transmission out, so basically they aren't.

Here's what I would do if you actually need a new car. Don't buy from these people again. As much as my Audi-loving heart hates to say it, don't even buy another Audi. Take it to you local Benz dealer, trade it in on a new GL-class, then drive back to the Audi dealer and say to them, however politely you see fit, "You see that? That's the car you didn't sell because you guys didn't do the right thing."

My grandfather did almost this exact same thing back in the 80's, when a salesman at a Mercury dealer pissed him off while he was buying a new Cougar. They were in the process of buying it, the salesman did something incredibly stupid. My grandfather left the Mercury dealer, drove over to the Chrysler dealer, bought a brand-new Cordoba (dat Corinthian leather), and drove it back to the Mercury dealer (all in the space of about 45 minutes) and proceeded to show the sales manager what sale he just lost and why.

The Mercedes and Audi dealership by me are the same dealership, and there is no way that any dealership is going to buy a car with a problem that Audi can't even fix. They are going to give s 12k for an Audi, so we are probably going to put up a craigslist ad for 500 off new Audi so we can get that money back and a different car.

Talk to Audi corporate. Tell them you are scared to ever buy another Audi, and no modern car should ever be in this situation before 100k. Tell them you are looking at a Mercedes instead. That might wake them up. Mercedes would more than likely cover this sort of problem if it were one of their cars, if the dealer was worth a shit anyways.

And hence we see reason #48231 why not to buy a newer, computerized Audi or higher end VW product.

Although I might still be a bit miffed at them they could possibly design an electrical system poorly enough to cause issues on my New Beetle I once had (It was given to me, silence, knaves!), including being able to hook the door harness up backwards, allowing the door lock switch to control the window (unlock was up, lock was down) and the window switch to control the door locks (up was unlock, down was lock).

The dealer did that. I had to explain to the service manager why it was wrong, and to get a car from the showroom and show it did exactly what they hooked mine up to do.

But now, it would be simpler for me to disassemble the door and swap the connectors.

I feel your pain on this. When I was younger, I bought a shiny CPO A4 1.8T with the multi tronic. I serviced it at the dealer, did everything they said.

Roughly two months before my CPO warranty was out, I felt like the car was shuddering from a roll. I took it to the dealer, and they found nothing wrong.

A month later, I went back, and they supposedly changed the TCM. They did not however, replace the other bits of the transmission. This was important to me because, I had read on the forums, that replacing the clutch pack with a 7 plate unit from the diesel cars rather than the original 6 plate, in addition to the TCM was the actual fix for the transmission failure problem.

Long story short, I ended up having an out of warranty Audi, with a known transmission flaw, that was not fixed when it could have been. In fear of suffering the cost of a full blown failure, which I believed to be inevitable, given the fragility of the car as evidenced by other owners. I sold the car, after owning it for 2 years for 9 thousand dollars less than I bought it for. **

I will never again buy an Audi. I will advise everyone I like to avoid them as well.

I hope that corporate or the dealer eventually do the right thing and crack open the "good will" fund; given that you have done everything by the book in terms of service and whatnot.

**Not to mention the ongoing coil pack issues, which I also had to fuss with.
