This is honestly all the GMT400 trucks were about: being a truck.

They didn't try to be a luxury vehicle and a utility vehicle at the same time, it was just pure utility. I love that about these trucks; they're such honest vehicles.

I had an '88 C10. 368k miles, 5.0. I put first gen escalade seats in it, the center out of an upmarket GMC suburban so i could keep the bench but have luxury. That thing is still the 2nd best car i ever owned.

What you don't realize, though, is that the early GMT400s were pretty advanced for their time. The interior was pretty refined, almost car-like. There was technology everywhere and the styling was very aerodynamic considering the F150 was really nothing more than a big sponge and, to sort of indirectly quote Bob Lutz here, the Ram was a cornflake box.

I think the new trucks are referred to as C3XX trucks. Whatever that means. Regardless, they aren't GMT400s as much as they would probably like to be.

You can configure a truck like this, though. Not with a V8, but if you want a back to basics work horse they are available.

EDIT: Oh shit. You can basically configure a Silverado any way you want. If you want a stripper truck with AWD and a V8 you can totally order it.

See?

Pickup Trucks are like pizzas, you can have one any way you want.

I was staggered by the options. I've never really looked at trucks in any detail since today. I'm so used to trim levels locking out certain powertrain options in cars.

With the Silverado you pick a trim that dictates the amount of amenities included in your truck and then you mix and match cabs, beds, and powertrains. It's nice!

I mean, it makes sense.

All this talk about the Dodge Ram (literally mentioned once) has made me want to watch Twister again. The Ram in that movie is literally the only full sized truck I've ever lusted after. Because V10.

If a truck buyer can't get the right tool for the job from Truckmaker A, he goes to Truckmaker B that can sell him what he wants. That's one reason the Tundra isn't even in the fleet game- they build Tundras like they do Camrys, and it doesn't work like that in the truck world. They're like Porsches, but without ripping your bank account open if you want a long wheelbase model with a sunroof and a big engine. It's probably why trucks are so popular in America, people like choice and nothing gives you more choices than an F-150.

V10? I thought it was just a V8 Ram 1500 in that movie, not an SRT10.

Just curious, how much will Chevy charge you for that truck? Because if my memory serves me correctly, a local dealer wanted $43,000 bucks for a basic two-wheel drive Silverado crew cab (no options except for chrome where you'd normally find black plastic bits) with the 4.3L V6. Granted, the 4.3 isn't an old boat anchor anymore, but still. I think Ram will sell you a 1500 Express crew cab with the 5.7L Hemi for ten grand less than that.

So yeah, what did that truck cost? $26,000? Again, Ram will sell you a stripper truck cheaper.

(Now Ram has been mentioned three times so far. ;-D)

my Dad had one of those. The previous owner left the original spark plugs in for 120,000 miles so it wasn't a V10 so much as a V7.

I think the Twister Ram 1500 had the 5.9L Magnum V8. But, yeah, you could buy your second-gen Ram with an 8.0L Magnum V10 that was more or less derived from the Viper's V10 engine.

EDIT: Just checked and, nope. I was wrong. The Flying Cow Ram did have the 8.0 V10. It wasn't a 1500 truck, it was actually a 2500.

I believe it was actually the other way around; the Viper's V10 was an aluminum mill derived from the iron LA V10 truck block.

Interesting that the Ram in the movie was a 2500 V10. I did not know that!

Neither did I, haha. Thankfully I have IMCDB on speed dial.

Hmmm... now that's interesting. I know the 8.0 V10 started out in life as a 5.9L V8 with two extra cylinders attached, so that makes sense.

I love these because of their simplicity. All you care about is the payload, engine, and transmission.

Ha, my next door neighbor and his father have one of these. They used it for their plumbing business, and it's still around.

It's exactly as described. Truck.

No AC, no nothing. A cab, a bed, and four tires. Whenever I borrow it he tells me, "Don't you dare wash it this time." as I usually do before I return things.
