Kinja'd!!!

This is the greatest weekend in autoracing, highlighted by the biggest Formula 1 event of the year. And people are chosing to turn away because of how it sounds.

Yes, that's as silly as it sounds. I'm reading blogs and posts lamenting the new F1 sound saying they just can't watch it anymore:

Sadly, I won't be tuning in this year because of the atrocious sound of the new V6 engine package. I've tried two times now and I just can't do it. :(

This right here is bullshit.

It's like shunning a supermodel because of her voice. "Gorgeous, fun, exciting, but my God that voice of hers... Not like she sounds like Fran Drescher or anything, but it's just not crazy-awesome. Back to hand lotion for me!"

And it's not like they sound bad, they're just, admittedly, not as good. But people make it sound like the FIA strapped fartcans on the back of mid-90s Toyota Tercels or something. Everything else is as awesome as before - maybe even better - but to avoid the race weekend in Monaco altogether because on a scale of 1-10, the engines sound like an 8 compared to the 9s they sounded like before(the old Ferrari V12 being a 10 in my book) seems elitist, and frankly, stupid. These are the same people who think FormulaE is a waste of time because they make no sound at all - who cares about the actual racing and tech involved?

And I the only one who feels this way?

I agree, people are like, "My vacuum cleaner sounds better."

No. It doesn't.

Just because it doesn't sound as good as old engines doesn't make it bad. F1 was never made for the purpose of sound anyway. If all you care about is sound, then just go watch old F1 videos.

No. The sound is disappointing, but I'm certainly not boycotting the race because of it. While the sound of the cars is important, it's not the whole ball of wax. This race is shaping up to be one of the best in years. (Fingers crossed.)

The race would be more interesting if there was a whole ball of wax rolling down the track Raiders of the Lost Ark style.

Don't give Bernie any ideas.

I agree with this.

"Boooooo!" I said when I first heard them. I also think the cars are ugly this year. I also think beer is too expensive. I also kick myself for having too many project cars sometimes.

Doesn't mean I'm NOT going to stop any of them.

I nearly didn't read this because I assumed you'd be on the other side. People really need to get over the sound. I like it. The only problem with it - seeing as I watch F1 on TV, so all I have to do about volume is turn it up - is that it's different. I don't have a problem with this, but people who can't stand change keep bitching about it as if it's an actual problem.

It isn't.

Besides, we've seen now what their solution is, and I'll take quieter engines over Shakotan exhaust trumpets, thank you VERY much...

My wife is a very casual fan. She'll watch most races and occasionally a qualifying. She hates the sound and believes it takes away from the whole feeling of the event and makes her less interested. She'll be watching her favorite tracks: this weekend, Spa, and Monza...but other than that? Less likely than last year. Side effect, she's watching more MotoGP.

If my vacuum cleaner sounded like this years cars I'd vacuum a lot more. It's not as exciting as the v8's or v10's but in exchange we get a lot more action on track, drivers struggling coming out of corners and (ignoring the Mercs) a lot of close good racing.

Agreed. It's been years since the Monaco Grand Parade produced any racing I found properly exciting

I like that the reduced engine volume makes the tires audible, not to mention the turbo spooling. You can really tell more about what the cars are doing in the in-car views.

Lack of rivalries is a better argument then this. Even though, whenever I catch up F1 live on TV, I don't think I've ever jumped the noise up. I think the last great sounds of F1 were in the times of those TT V10 engines. I still play those tracks just like music. Because they are.
