The Jeep brand was never in bankruptcy, with the closest being the 1930s, but Willys-Overland was able to weather that. Willys was purchased by Kaiser because they saw value in the Jeep model line. After Kaiser's sales went down the shitter, they shipped their tooling for passenger cars down to Brazil and focused only on Jeeps, which attracted the attention of AMC (around the time AMC was still a big deal). Kaiser Industries thought it was a good idea to sell Jeep to AMC and leave the auto industry and they did just that. By 1978 AMC was losing $70M a year from dismal car sales, but Jeep sales were good enough to net them almost $40M in profits. Renault stepped in and bought a huge stake in AMC to keep them floating, but more was necessary and by 1983 Renault owned over half of AMC. Skip ahead to 1986, and Renault's CEO was assassinated outside his house and the French were losing their shit - Renault's shareholders wanted to drop AMC because sales still sucked, so they peddled AMC to Chrysler (who had AMC assembling Chrysler cars previously anyway). Lee Iacocca saw the light that was the ZJ Grand Cherokee, and had Chrysler purchase AMC and Jeep from Renault for $1.5B. Jeep has always been a money maker for whoever has owned it, unfortunately Jeep always came with a lot of baggage.
