It's like the F1 equivalent of stance. I wonder how much the tire distorts from speed and/or heat and this rubs. Or, because it's F1, the tires are made of magic and it doesn't at all. Pic from !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

or perhaps the very edge is made of a material that wears into the shape of the tire if there is contact.

I'm gonna go with "doesn't at all".

Maybe that's what was causing all those tire explosions...

As the tyre heats up it does expand, BUT they shrink as well. What you say? Well, wear, my friend, it's not like these tyres last long is it? So there you have it, they calculate how much the wear is compared to how much they expand and make the gap JUST perfect so it won't rub ;P

It does look like the trailing edge piece is riveted on, so it might be a replaceable part.

The increased diameter would happen much faster than the tire would wear. Centrifugal force would distort it immediately.

I know :) I'm just having a laugh. No harm done I hope.

Ah, the written word is sometimes difficult to determine people's level of cheek. Never any harm done. Carry on.
