I stumbled upon a remarkable photo essay by Thomas McAvoy for LIFE Magazine. The essay covers Ferrari's return trip from Silverstone to Maranello, where the cars were prepared and then sent to the 1956 Monaco GP. It includes fantastic shots of the mechanics at the factory working on the engines and the cars, photos of drivers Peter Collins, Eugenio Castellotti, and the legendary Juan Manuel Fangio, in his only year with the Scuderia, and images from the race.

I've posted a few of the images here, but there are many more on site linked below.

I love this photo because it portrays the stereotypical race driver and mechanic—the driver suave and masculine, the mechanic dirty, sleeves rolled up, cranked ball cap. Just brilliant stuff.

Check out more photos from the essay at !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
